DVD Ripper Is it better to rip to the hard drive first?

For making an Ipod copy is it better to rip to the hard drive first or to just rip straight from the DVD drive? Does one way make better versions (no audio lags etc) than the other?

Going to the hard drive first saves wear and tear on your disk drive.Should be no audio lags ether way.
