DVD Ripper No working subs after rip

I have an issue where the separate idx and sub files are created but are treated as empty/bad files but ONLY for dvd rips, not any blu-ray. The idx file is 2kb and sub was 2,454kb. Version 8.x.x.x does rip my subs ok but not with my current version of 9.0.2.6

    OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
    CPU: Intel quad-core 2.66 GHz

This is probably not what you want to hear but I just tried with exactly the same profile and it works a treat. I suggest you click on the title selected to turn it blue and then the subpicture tab and make sure English has a green arrow in the box next to it. I'll include a screenshot:

90312, Thank you for your reply. ANY reply is very welcome since I have a feeling this issue is a wacky one and probably exclusive to me.

Unfortunately I have not only done this before but I have selected EACH individual track (all languages) separately and de-selected/re-selected to try to extract the subtitles. In ALL cases, I get the idx/sub file but no subtitle. It works with my version of 8.2.2.7 but not 9.0.2.6

Since it comes out ok in version 8, I am thinking there is something between version 9+ and my system (possibly audio). I can't say for certain but I thought the earlier versions of 9 worked for me. I wish I had disabled automatic updates at that time.

Everyone has their version they like but personally, I've found that #9 offered a faster speed rip and quality for me, plus a quicker interface. Currently, I am ripping basic/regular DVDs in 9 and then again in 8 because the subtitles won't display for DVD's.

I tried two more titles this morning and both are fine. Our logs look identical except it appears you are using CUDA on a graphics card that is marginal at best. I don't know if that has any effect on subtitles or not but try turning all GPU activity off, set all A/V codecs to software and give it a go.

I've disabled CUDA and set the 4 codecs to software. This did not solve the problem. I've also tested an avi and mp4 format and still no separate working subs.

I tested the same video with the subtitles directly to video and that part works fine. It's just whatever information needs to be written into the .idx and .sub files are not being completed properly. Third-party programs cannot access these files either and treat them as improper files.

This is obviously something on my end that is causing the problem and it's not a format setting. Since version 8 works fine, it is something that version 9 uses/does differently with my system during the audio/subtitle process that it doesn't like.

Any ideas of what else version 9 uses/touches file-wise that version 8 doesn't? I could have a corrupted/bad file on my end causing this issue. I just lack the knowledge of what it could be or where to look.

          Thanks

The software is working for me so maybe it was a pooched install? Try uninstalling it and download ccleaner if you don't have it it's free and run it on the registry until it finds no issues. It usually takes me three times. Download a fresh installer to the hard drive, right click on it and run as administrator.

I've uninstalled 9.0.2.6, ran ccleaner till it didn't find any resgistry issues, redowloaded 9.0.2.6 and re-installed as administrator. No fix.

I retested a blu ray and it works the subtitles fine but not regular dvds. The idx and sub files are smaller than they should be so it seems to write/do something but something is causing it to not complete properly even though it is finishing and not listing a problem.

I'm wondering if it's my cpu causing an issue during the process. I do have an older one and maybe some of the newer code here has caused it to slip up somewhere.

Sounding like I'll have to rip the subs separately in version 8 or just use it by itself for any regular dvds.

              Any other suggestions?

I even thought it might be because I was making the mkv from HDD folders so I tried from a disc and all is well. I am at a loss pal no idea what's wrong.

We've done all we can 90312.

The more I think about it, the more I think that's what the issue is. I have an older cpu and the current coding caused a mis-step somewhere (not blaming the DVDFab team at all). At least I can fall back to the older versions.

Thanks again for all your help 90312!

Lol! I should have been more specific. My older hardware is probably at fault somewhere with the coding from Fab V9, the cpu is just a possibility. If it was the issue of the cpu, you'd be getting more issues like this.

There IS the issue of my motherboard. It's a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P model (v1) which looks to be about 9 years old at this point and could be at fault. I've noticed a new quirk last year that after about 3 weeks or more of my system being up, I need to reset my modem because I lose connectivity and the speeds become null. This lack of data transfer could imply that I have a degraded node somewhere on the board. I don't know if Fab V9 would push the data somewhere else that Fab V8 wouldn't be going for subtitles but there is this to think about.

The only other transfer of data is occurring through the hard drive but I can't see that being part of the issue.

I tried a Disney short subject about 10 minutes on the old 2.2Ghz machine for obvious reasons and it didn't work? So I redid it on my i7 machine and it still didn't work from the idx/sub files, works fine rendered into the video. Seems to depend on the title for me.

Hmm, that is interesting and a lot more comforting in a way. It definitely means that something is going on between older/some videos and the other stuff. I did plan to rip most of my older non-blu-ray stuff first, so I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for your additional testing, effort and work 90312. Tell them I said you deserve a raise!
