Best Universal Video Format?

I'm trying to convert my DVD into a video format that will play on both XBOX and the Samsung TVs. I would also like the format to play on as many devices as possible, I am dumbfounded as to which profile and settings I need to set.

Can anyone help?

I don't think there is a right answer for this jaxim, but it has been my experience that mp4.h264.aac is the most compatible format on a wider range of devices that I have.

I've given you some bad information my friend, apparently DVDFab has switched the AVC video profile from "baseline" to "main" and not even the PSP profile will play on the PSP any more. 9.0.3.0

It seems like the AVI profile (xvid,mp3) plays both on my Xbox and Samsung TV, but I thought AVI was not the preferred format.

I would much prefer to convert to an h264 mp4 file (as you originally posted) as that seems like the best format to stream to my mobile devices. But as you pointed out later, there is something wrong with DVDFab's h264 profile since it doesn't play so some of my devices even thought I would think they should.

Is there a way use the h264 profile and use "baseline" instead of "main"?

I haven't found it. The developers will have to look at it. In the mean time I'm using something else that makes an mp4 using baseline AVC and they work in all my devices.

What file format are you 1st converting your DVDs to using DVDFab before converting to mp4 (using baseline AVC)?

I usually just rip the DVD to the HDD as full disk and use the HDD folder as the source in ripper. It's faster and saves wear and tear on my ODD. I have no opinion on converting one file type to another, never tried it.

Until this is fixed you can use a free program called MKV Merge to turn these AVI files into MKV files in just a few minutes since there is no recoding, with no loss of quality.

I have a samsung TV and have found it to be OK when playing from a harddive, but over DNLA I had to rename the .mkv files as .avi files before it would play them. It also only plays 720 over the network. Mine is the 59" 3D Plasma one
