I'm trying to rip my Blu-ray collection for playback in two formats. The first would be to stream from my Synology DS213 and playback on my PS3 and Sony BDP S590. For this I would like full 1080p. The second is for playback on my iPad3 or iPhone5. For this I would like 720p.
I was using the iPad3.h264.multichannel profile for both. Ripping it twice and changing the resolution to try and meet my goals above. I had a problem with two movies Avatar and Journey to the Center of the Earth. When playing on the iPad they were pillarboxed and letterboxed. Obviously something was messed up in the rip.
So I started over and when looking at the resolution settings I noticed that they vary from movie to movie. One may list 1920x1080 and 1280x720 but the next lists something like 1920x855 and 1280x533. Should I just focus on the first number to meet my resolution goals? 1920 = 1080p and 1280 = 720p?
And what could have happened in the rips that were pillarboxed and letterboxed?
