BD Ripper (3D Plus) Elysium subtitles blocky when direct rendered (MKV)

When I select the option to direct render the subs into the MKV, the text is coming out blocky, transparent and barely legible. Remuxing them (as PGS) seems to work fine. I've included a screenshot of both...

Setup:
Intel Core2Quad 2.66
8GB RAM
nVidia GT240 1GB
Windows 8.1 64-bit

* I've tried with CUDA on & off.
* Remux using MKV: Copy Video/Audo (passthrough) PGS subs
* Direct render using MKV: Copy Audio/Video 1 Pass

BTW: non-english subs are on second english track w/display forced selected

Any ideas? Looks like there are others with this same issue...
