MP4 vs MP4 Passthrough

Ripping a TV episode (around 48 min.) in MP4 mode takes me almost 2 hours to rip at 8 fps. Ripping in MP4 Passthrough takes about 8 minutes at 13 Mbs.

Can you tell me why the disparity and what the difference is, or is there someplace you can direct me so I can read up on it.

The MP4 Passthrough does not encode and compress so it just passes the audio and video through to the container. Much quicker but at the expense of file size, passthrough is much larger.

8fps for ripping is very slow on anything approaching modern hardware, i regularly see at least 10x that on 1 year old Intel desktop with integrated graphics. What hardware are you using to rip?

My system is a couple of years old, I am looking to up grade to a nas or some type of hybrid htcp system so I can access and view all my movies from the hard drive, eg. Plex.

I am just starting out ripping files just to see what works.

90312: I dont really care about file size, drives have gotten so inexpensive of late, I could all my movies onto a couple+ of 4Tb drives.

If file size is not an issue then use passthrough for sure, you won't loose any quality as well as being faster.

Seems to me there used to be one? Can your playback device play MKV files? There is an MKV Passthrough.

Must be a bug. The selection is there and can be selected but as soon as the source is analyzed it changes to MP4 and the Passthrough selection is gone?
