    iPod Classic and best resolution

I have both a iPod Nano and a iPod Classic 160gb (brand new). I want to use my classic on trips with some of my DVDs. I usually go with the default settings. The bitrate is lower, sound is low (64) and FPS is usually 23 or so and I used the single pass. I know I can change these for the better.

While the quality is ok like this for me personally on my iPod, I am curious about the cropping or the sides being cut off. Most all of my DVDs are widescreen versions, so not sure what the best setting resolution wise or in the cropping screen (disable, automatic, custom) would be.

    Thanks

    Hi McP,

I find DVDFab’s cropping feature really well implemented because it’s variable (you can remove some or all of the letterboxing) and you can preview the results in advance.

Here’s how I convert wide-screen videos to 4:3 full screen:

Click on Edit. With wide-screen videos, you won’t see the target screen resolution on the list but don’t worry, select anything for now; you can change this in the next step.

Click on Video Effect Settings (this is where you can resize and crop).

Resize Tab: The default selection is Size Zoomed In/Out on Source, instead select Custom Size and then input your screen resolution values and hit Add. (320x240 for the iPod Touch I believe.)

Now go to the Crop tab. To cut that wide-screen image down to size, use the Letterbox / Pan&Scan slider under How to process “black bars”? Pan&Scan will give you an image that should fit full-screen on your iPod. You can review the results of your selection on the right side, see the screenshot below. (Note: When you start fooling around with the slider, DVDFab automatically switches from “Automatic” to “Custom”.)

Once you’ve decided on a setting, hit OK, then OK again and then Start to get the conversion under way.

    Cheers and hope this helps!

All iPods that support video except iPod Touch,
support support 4:3 or 1.33333 ratio or as closes to that

iPod Touch, 16.9 which is ~1.78 ratio,
but I have been able to push it to ~2.4 ratio

Don't forget to bump up the audio volume level,
I downgrade the audio to 96 bit and increase volume level to 150%
found that 100% is to low while using in the car.
