Unable to open DVDFab

    Other Unable to open DVDFab


    I am currently unable to open DVDFab at all . However, I think I have figured this out.
    1. I load my OS (Win7) from an SSD.
    2. To save space I have found a way to get my user Profile to store on my HDD (D
    3. I think DVDFab has an issue with my profile being on the D: drive instead of the C: drive.


    I tested this theory by creating a user account, adding it to the admin group and then opening DVDFab... Work great. on the SAME computer.

    Difference: The profile is on the C:

    I was able to find the following in the Event Viewer:

    What I need to know is if there is anything I can do to fix this. Defect in the software? Using hard paths instead of variables?

    Please post the values for the following environment variables (start -> run -> cmd -> set):
    ALLUSERSPROFILE
    APPDATA
    HOMEPATH
    USERPROFILE

    It isn't hardcoded.

      Here's what you can do to fix.
      First, uninstall DVDFab.
      Second, Install DVDFab "as Administrator". Do not start at the end of installation.
      Third, Start application "as Administrator" and register it with the activation key.
      You should me OK from that point forward.
      Oh, something else. Please keep installation directories unchanged during installation.

        You are correct, Fab wants to be on the C:drive
        Were you installing Fab on your D: drive?

          CBR929, that is wrong. I have everything on K: and it works.

          Fab may use %SystemDrive%, but I don't think so.

              SET Paths


              ALLUSERSPROFILE=C:\ProgramData
              APPDATA=D:\Profile\Kris\AppData\Roaming
              HOMEPATH=\Profile\Kris
              USERPROFILE=D:\Profile\Kris

              Also, I am not installing DVDFab to my D: drive. Only my profile resides there. I am installing DVDFab to the following path:

              C:\Program Files (x86)\DVDFab 7

                I agree, it doesn't matter what letter designation, as long as all files are in a same drive (doesn't apply on selectable destinations), and I'm pretty much sure, it has to be %SystemDrive%

                  I tried the steps you posted. No good... However, your most resent post has shed some light on this. It might be a hard coded variable... LOL. Wouldn't that be a kick in the butt.

                    Exactly. The sole purpose of those steps was to restore hardcoded dependencies. I'm puzzled why it didn't worked....

                      I am going to create a temporary admin account again (with its profile on the C: drive). This time I'm not going to uninstall/reinstall. I'm just going to see if it works.

                        Well, it worked. With a profile that was stored on C: it opened without issue. I fear that there is nothing I can do about this.

                        I'm going to keep at it... I am tenacious to a fault.

                            I got a reply back from DVDFab tech support... The reply was very short, "please re-install as admin..."

                            I got a bit of a laugh out of it. Mainly my fault. I have worked in the tech support field for a decade and you would think that I would be able to provide another tech support team with a proper trouble-ticket

                            Anyway, I sent a reply with a lot more details and some misc. data (dxdiag, event log and MSInfo)... Hopefully their dev team to figure out why the software cares where the profile is and make an easy fix
