I am converting BD to my ps3 for playback in mp4 format. I am looking to identify the general 'accepted' bitrate for this encoding. To me file size won't be much of an issue.

Well, max bitrate actually dictated by your device. It's pointless to create 12 Mbps video for device that can handle only 2 Mbps. I don't have PS3 and don't have "face-to-face" experience with it, but I've seeing in this forum numbers 1500 Kbps in general and 2000 Kbps for action video. But again, this is off a top of my head, and I would recommend to check with parameters of your device for this magic number. This principal applies for any device, not just PS3.
