    Problem with subtitles

    Ok...next newbie question:

I am using BD-mobile option. I have encoded Hellboy2, Book of ELI and 300.

My problem: I cannot get subtitles to play, despite the fact that the .idx and .sub files are created every time I encode.

I am not using the "display only forced subtitles" option.

Only forced subtitles will display (when the elves speak elvish in Hellboy2, for instance).

I have tried encoding from a pre-ripped folder (unencrypted using another product) and directly from the blu-disc using DVDFAB. Same result...the .idx and.sub files created are not recognized by VLC and I cannot force them to play using the Video\Subtitles Track\Open File menu option in VLC.

ALShow cannot play them either (I tried it to make sure that VLC is not the problem...despite the .sub files I created using DVD-mobile playing fine on VLC).

I have tried encoding to AVI (h264.audiocopy) and MKV (mkv.remux).

I have tried encoding to AVI at 1280x720 (downconvert) and to AVI and MKV at 1920x1080 (native).

Every time, I ensure that the English subpicture is chosen on the main screen.

When looking at the codec details in VLC, all the subpictures are listed for DVDs I have encoded to AVI.

However, for the encoded Blu-discs, VLC lists no subtitles on any of the three movies, no matter what format I used to encode them.

    Pointers?

Sorry...and I probably used the wrong forum as well...Blu-ray to mobile is where I should have started a new one. Please move it there so it is properly located.

      Thanx.

            You are welcome

Someone will be along shortly to help with your problem.

But you stated VLC does not list subtitles... Have you tried them on a burned disc or with a different player.

On several occasions VLC has failed to read the subtitles on regular DVDs but they were there when played from a disc.

              wapitikev,
Quick solution for content you already have processed is to remux it. Get MkvmergeGUI (little free program, google it), install and open your content with it, throw your subs into it and remux. It will take 5-10 min tops.
In a meanwhile, developers will take a look into this issue.

BTW, if you want player that works, here's the one: http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/downlo...lassic-hc.html
              it's free

I tried ALShow but I couldn't force the subtitle track on that either.

I'll try MPC and see what happens.

If they play, then remuxing won't be necessary.

                  Thanx.

                    Success!

MPC shows the subtitles by default on the MKV file of Hellboy2.

I'll try it on the rest but I'm sure it'll work.

Again, a heartfelt thanx for this solution.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure, subs are not there. You can easy find it out with another utility - MediaInfo. Please download and install it, you will find it handy in a future.
So, you most likely have to mux them in.

I suspect that this problem is not with the player but with extraction of the subtitles from the BR.

I'd be trying one of the free subtitle editors on the extracted subs to see whether they are valid before attempting muxing them in.

MPC actually shows them under the subtitles menu for both Hellboy2 and Book of Eli.

The properties of the file (details tab) doesn't list the subtitles, but they are on the menu and they play.

Ok, had to step away there for a minute...

...Tested 300 and those subtitles work as well.

So, the subtitles were actually extracted to the files but neither VLC nor ALshow could read them...interesting.

So, note to self, uninstall VLC and ALShow and keep MediaPlayerClassic.

                            Sorry for the confusion gang.

                            Thanx for the solution.

PS-If I remuxed the .sub file back into the main movie I would lose the ability to turn off the subtitles, correct?

No, you should be able to just turn them on or off.
