MPG output

If this has been asked and answered please forgive and provide link (I searched but didn't see it). I'd like to create an MPG file as output, then edit (I use VideoRedo) so I can take out sections of video and/or audio (to make family friendly).

What's the best way to create an MPG output file so it's editable in VideoRedo?
