DVD Ripper Xvid or h264? is it x264?

firstly, is the h264 codec x264? or another variety?

secondly, looking purely at the numbers, i dont see much difference in filesize or bitrate between xvid and h264 from dvdfab......not checked visual test.....

can anyone elaborate on which to use for quality backups?

    H264/x264 same thing..

My subjective opinion is that h264 gives better quality at the same bitrate.

I would agree on H.264! For me, I have done a visual on the same file, for mp4 H264, DVIX, and XVID, I'm sold on H.264 My Canon 7D DSLR shoots in H264 and Its just stunning how good it is, a little bit of a hassle to edit, but that will go away soon, with upgrades to edit programs and the newer faster hardware that is now out.

Have a look at the Samsung profile that I have posted in the "New Profiles" section of the forum. Quite a lot of maembers are using this profile and they reckon it's good.

Also have a read of my 'Best Practice: DVD to Mobile" as I go into a few things there that you will need to understand.
