Hello forum.
I'm new to all this and I've run into a problem with aspect ratios. I am trying to convert .rec files from my Topfield 5800 PVR to MPEG-4 or MKV to use on a Sumvision Cyclone MKV enclosure and a standard 16:9 TV. I have edited the .rec files in MPEG Streamclip and saved them as MPEG-2. These files play fine in Windows Media Player and on the Cyclone. The file's video details (according to MPEG Streamclip) are:
Video Tracks:
224 MPEG-2 704 x 576 16:9, 25 fps, 8.00 Mbps, upper field first
In DVDfab 7.0.9.3 the source aspect ratio is displayed as 838 x 576 (1.45 : 1).
However, whenever I try to convert these MPEG-2 files to DiVX, MPEG4, MKV etc in DVDfab, the process works fine but the final output doesn't fill the screen horizontally and looks more like 4:3, with everything looking overly tall and thin. I've tried setting the output frame resolution to several of the various 16:9 (1.777) ratios, and I've tried enabling/disabling cropping etc. but every time the result is the same.
Is there a way to force the output file aspect ratio to be 16:9?
I've had no problems with DVDs, so I'm assuming this is something to do with (a) my incompetence/understanding (a strong possibility) or
(b) the TV recording and forcing the TV to stretch the input to match the TV's 16:9 aspect ratio (combined with (a) above)?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
