Hello Readers!
I've joined the forum today to solve my issues ripping via the WMV profiles.
Some Background:
I've logged around just under 2TB of ripping using the latest V7.0.9.3 using WMV profiles. In fact streaming to the bedrooms, office, etc is awesome. Around 20% of my DVD collection failed to rip with an audio sync issue (see used settings below). After ripping 4 various DVD's and testing them through my X-Box 360 streamer interface I've now got new problems minus the audio sync issue. I'll go into these later. Here's my PC spec;
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
8GB RAM
2x ATI HD3870 (X-Fired)
SoundMax Digital HD Audio
RAID1 320GB (OS/Programs/Temp)
RAID5 2TB (Data including media files)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
Fresh build (17/10/2010) with updated firmware and drivers across entire system excluding updates released within 3 weeks.
Completed all Windows updates.
The Test DVD's Ripped with V8.0.2.4
Star Trek The Next Generation Season 1 - Region 2 - Dolby Digital Stereo
Due South Season 1 - Region 2 - Dolby Digital Stereo
Friends Season 1 - Region 2 - Dolby Digital Stereo
The Matrix - Region 2 - Dolby Digital 5.1
Blown Away - Region 2 - Dolby Digital Stereo
The Problems - Tested 17-18/10/2010
NOTE: Applicable to all test DVD's unless stated otherwise.
1. The audio gets jittery on first quater of the end credits then cuts out. The video plays to the end. Only occurs when ripping the entire DVD and gets better if I increase the Frame Rate (audio plays for
half credits then cuts out). Applicable to Star Trek, Due South and Friends.
2. Skipping a chapter on the X-Box Streamer interface and the screen goes black for 3-4 seconds before the video comes back. Audio back instantly.
3. When fast forwarding on the X-Box Streamer, the time shows you are going forward, however the video isn't. Returning to play and the video starts playing okay.
4. If skipping to another timeframe in Windows Media Player the video starts off blocky and then after 2-3 seconds returns to correct quality. Audio plays back normally during the blocky segment.
4. Background noise like a buzzing sound when ripping only The Matrix.
5. Video has the 'comb effect' where high speed motion video shows jagged horizontal lines making the quality very poor. Deinterlacing has no effect on or off. Applicable to appear when ripping Trek, Due South and Friends only.
DVDFab Settings Used When Testing
Matched DVD Audio format, Frame Rate and Resolution size as reported by DVD details.
Bit Rate 3000
No Subtitles
The Tests
1. Ripped from hard drive. No effect.
2. Shut down all non-essential systems such as AV and made all DVDFab exe's priority to access resource. No effect.
3. Reset the profiles. No effect.
4. Tested with GOM Player and Media Player 12. No change.
5. Checked playback on Windows XP 32Bit Windows Media Player 11 in case of an transcoding issues and also to rule out the current WMV problem with WMP12 on Windows 7 64Bit. No Change.
6. Ripped Friends from V7.0.9.3 using WMVWMA10 profile same settings. Only issue is the 'comb effect' issue but much less than v8.0.2.4.
7. Uninstall (including deletion of DVDFab directory in Documents) and reinstall. No effect.
Other Various Profiles Tested With Settings Above (For results consistentcy)
genericavidivxaudiocopy - No problems perfect rip - Convert rip to WMV failed with sames problems
genericavixvidaudiocopy - No problems perfect rip - Convert rip to WMV failed with sames problems
Others not tested due to DLNA compatibility issues with Windows Media Player 12
In conclusion without further testing to prove otherwise I believe these are bugs to be ironed out in V8. For now I'm ripping the remainder of my collection using V7.0.9.3 and putting the bad rip DVD's to the back of the line. If fixes still aren't available by then I'll rip to genericavidivxaudiocopy with the intention of converting them to WMV when DVDFab developers have sorted out the problems. DivX is the best alternative for DLNA devices (wider range builtin native support than XVid) when used in conjuction with Windows Media Player 12 Streaming.
DVDFab DEVELOPERS - I hope this helps in some way to solve the problems. If you want me to run further tests, please let me know exactly what you'd like me to do. It would be good to know if you're aware of these problems and if any have a tentative fix date as I've about 300 DVD's to rip.
Thanks & Regards,
