No Sound after rip DVD to MP4

HELP!! no sound!! I am new to this, I have tried to rip 2 different DVD movies into MP4 format. Each one took over and hour to do(BTW, is that typical for time?). When done I dragged and dropped them into itunes to watch. Picture great, but no sound. I went to common settings made sure that one box is checked and that all say "software" but still no sound. I have spent all day trying to get this to work properly, getting VERY frustrated! The first time I tried to just "copy" but my goal is to back up all my DVDs to EHD, and then access via game console so I can have everything as if it were "on demand". So I did figure out that I need to rip, not copy…right?? For streaming?? but how do I get sound to work??

    Keep it simple...

Oh, and please keep explanations simple, I am new at this….Thanks! :) I did not even know that I had to rip and not copy for streaming from computer/game console …I did not even know where to start when I downloaded DVDfab, so I amazed I got this far..LOL!!! First I tried to "copy" then I got the vid and audio files in one folder but could not play them…it did give me a play option in another folder but it was only the first 7 minutes of the movie, and that one had subtitles at the bottom. I am willing to keep trying to figure this out…but need simple steps how to successfully get from point A to point B. Tried looking for a tutorial…but the ones I saw did the same thing I did and had no issues. Is it because I am on mac? Tried looking in the forum…but so many of the explanations are obviously for tech savvy…and I am not as tech savvy as I thought! :o

Another clue….Oh, and BTW, I did have sound in the 7 minuted video when I did the "copy" option…but had the subtitles that I could not turn off. I should say I had no "menu" option to be able to turn off ST, I imagine that was a player thing and nothing to do with the copy. But I am almost certain I unchecked the ST box?

I edited the format to mp4/aac to see if that works….will let you know…The default was mp4/mp3. I am also trying it on my PC to see if that makes a diff. but mac is taking over and hour and almost done. PC is over an hour and is only 30% done…is this typical? For how much time it takes I mean?

YEAH!!!!! that worked!! FYI everyone change the default mp4/mp3 to mp4/aac!!! then works in iTunes!!!! Now to get rid of black bars….any suggestions??
