    mp4 passthrough, not dts-hd ma?

BD Ripper on Mac does not pass-through DTS-HD MA for mp4 passthrough. It only passes through the DTS Core. It does pass through the entire thing for mkv, however.

Why doesn't it do this for mp4? mp4 itself supports DTS-HD.

It does. The supported formats for mp4 is found at http://mp4ra.org/#/codecs.

ffmpeg has no problem converting an mkv container with a dts-hdma audio track to mp4. quicktime player does not play the audio but vlc and mpv and probably most other players do.

Hi vdv, we will add support to keep DTS-HD for MP4 in the future.
