    Generates AVI file stops at about 65 mins during playback

    I noticed this while trying to convert a movie on my drive (in DVD format created from DVD Copy) to avi. The avi is created but when I play the movie in Media Player 11 it stops at about 65 mins and that is the length Media Player shows. I tried converting it with various versions. They all showed the avi about the same length but my version 5 and version 7 played correctly for the full length of the movie, however all of the version 8 releases stopped playing around 65 mins.

    v5.2.3.2 - 1256075 KB - WinXP length 1:35:49 - Media Player 11 Length 1:35:49 - Plays full length
    v7.0.9.3 - 1257405 KB - WinXP length 1:35:50 - Media Player 11 Length 1:35:50 - Plays full length
    v8.0.3.2 - 1549930 KB - WinXP length 1:35:50 - Media Player 11 Length 1:13:59
    v8.0.4.0 - 1554203 KB - WinXP length 1:35:50 - Media Player 11 Length 1:04:59
    v8.0.5.0 - 1554201 KB - WinXP length 1:35:50 - Media Player 11 Length 1:04:59
    v8.0.5.2 - 1263472 KB - WinXP length 1:35:49 - Media Player 11 Length 1:20:01

    I performed all of these conversions on a clean VM image XP starting with v5 and then upgrading. At the end I performed another conversion with v5 and v7 and confirmed they still created good files that played the full length. All of the conversions used the Archos 605 profile that is included. During creation of the avi files none of the v8 releases reported an issue.

    Hi, napertivo
    Please change another media player to retry, such as KM, Splayer.
    Thank you for your report.

      Thanks for the suggestion katiekim. I went and tried the following:

      KM Player - Reported the same incorrect lengths as Media Player for v8 files.
      pyTivo and Galleon - Both transferred the incorrect length to my Tivo for the v8 files.

      I tried VLC Player but it reported "This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try and fix it?". This was only for the v8 files. (I am going to let it try and fix it and see if it truncates the file or repairs whatever is broken).

      The v7 files played and transferred correctly for all the players.

      So it doesn't appear to be a player issue but rather some sort of corruption to the avi file by the v8 releases.

        Allowing VLC Player to run its fix of the file allowed it to play the entire movie (although it gets the video and audio out of sync). I am going to get the log files from the conversions but I'm not sure they will show anything since they report completing successfully.

            How big is the created AVI file?

            The OpenDML specs place ~2Gb limit and there can be problems playing files larger than this.

              The avi files created with v8 releases vary somewhat in size but all are below 2GB. Here is the directory listing of where I have been saving them. The number towards the end of the file name is the version it was created with and then whether is ran 'good' for the full length or ran 'short' and ended 15-30 mins early.

                OK, I just made some progress in narrowing down the issue. I ran it again in 8.0.5.2 and used the profile generic.avi.divx.mp3 and it plays the complete length. The file size is much smaller and the quality isn't as good but it worked.

                12/01/2010 03:28 PM 806,829,296 A Christmas Carol(2009).8052.Good.genericAviDivxMP3.avi

                So the question is what is the difference between the two profiles that the Archos 605 profile causes corruption in the v8 releases but does not in the pre-v8 releases? The same Archos 605 profile works fine in 7.0.9.3 so it must be triggering something in the v8 code that corrupts the avi.

                Here are the two:

                This is the profile that worked in 8.0.5.2:
                <profile name="generic.avi.divx.mp3" version="200" device="generic" tag="dvdfab" description="The profile is used to create avi(xvid + mp3) file, which can be played in DivX compatible player." >
                <common>
                <file format="avi" />
                <audio copy="0" codec="mp3" channel="2" >
                <freq value="48000" list="32000,44100,48000" />
                <bitrate value="64000" list="64000,96000,128000,192000,256000,320000" />
                <volume percent="100" />
                </audio>
                <video>
                <size list="" />
                <encode codec="xvid" fourcc="DX50" bitrate_kbps="900" >
                <mode value="real_time" list="real_time, high_quality" />
                </encode>
                </video>
                </common>
                <acodec name="lame">
                </acodec>
                <vcodec name="xvid">
                </vcodec>
                </profile>

                This is the profile that fails in 8.0.5.2 but works fine in 7.0.9.3:
                <profile name="ARCHOS 605" version="200" device="pvp" tag="dvdfab" description="The profile is used to create avi(mpeg4 + mp3 audio) file, which can be played on ARCHOS 605 WiFi." >

                  Hi, napertivo
                  1. I tested this problem, and DVDFab worked fine about vob file generated by DVD fulldisc to avi with profile ARCHOS 605.
                  2. Please change another DVD source to retry.
                  3. I used DVDFab version 8052beta and 8053beta.
                  4. Thanks.

                    Thanks katiekim, I will try that tonight. I did try and fail with another movie but it was a backup copy and not an original. I will have to go dig out the original to see if it works. The conversion to avi with the backup copy using v7.0.9.3 was successful. The backup had been made using DVDFab, probably v6 or v7. Could there be something wrong with what was written with the earlier versions that is causing v8 to have issues? As a DVD it plays fine.

                      katiekim, I did some more testing with 8.0.5.2. Every movie I try is truncated to 1:20:01. If the movie is shorter in length than that the avi is fine but anything longer just stops at the 1:20:01. I have tested this with 6 movies and they all behaved the same. How long was the movie you tested?

                      I believe that it is associated to the file size created. If the avi created is larger than about 1070M (maybe 1024M?) then the movie will be truncated when played. In the case of using the Archos 605 profile the longest the movie can be is 1:20:01. The latest movie I tried was Ice Age 1, the movie is 1:21:07 in length with a file size of 1070M when using the Archos 605 profile. At first I thought the avi file was fine until I looked closer, the movie was truncated during the credits right at 1:20:01. Using the profile generic.avi.divx.audiocopy the avi created is much smaller in file size and plays the entire length of 1:21:07.

                      Is it possible that v8 is having an issue creating avi files greater than 1Gb?

                        ok, here is an update on the file sizes and movie lengths for the two profiles using 8.0.5.2:

                        Profile AVI File size Movie Length Played Length
                        generic.avi.divx.audiocopy 1,351,489 KB 1:42:20 1:42:20
                        pvp.avi.mpeg4.mp3.Archos.605 1,349,018 KB 1:42:20 1:20:01

                        So it wouldn't be the file size in general since the 'generic' works fine. I'm going to look for another profile similar to the Archos 605 to see if I can determine what item in the profile is causing the issue.

                          If I use the profile "Windows Mobile Smartphone" the created avi is fine but much smaller than using the profile "Archos 605". I used the default settings in both. Comparing the two profiles there are only a few things different so it is one of the settings that is causing the issue. Here are the differences between the two profiles:

                          ----- This is in the Archos file ----
                          <bitrate value="128000" list="64000,96000,128000,160000,192000,320000" />
                          <volume percent="175" />
                          <size list="320x240,532x400,640x480,720x480,720x576" limited="1" />
                          <encode codec="mpeg4" fourcc="DIVX" bitrate_kbps="1500" maxbitrate_kbps="4000" >

                          ----- This is in the Windows Mobile Smartphone ----
                          <bitrate value="64000" list="64000" />
                          <volume percent="100" />
                          <size list="220x176,320x240,480x360" limited="1" />
                          <encode codec="mpeg4" fourcc="DIVX" bitrate_kbps="900" maxbitrate_kbps="1500" >

                          The Archos has the higher resolutions so that would explain the larger size. I am going to try at a lower resolution to see if the Archos profile works fine with that.

                            After getting the error I upgraded to 8.0.5.6 and tried again. This time I didn't get an error message but it still failed at playing the file correctly.

                            THE_LAST_AIRBENDER.Title1.mpeg4.mp3.720x480.8056.a vi 1,360,870 KB Movie stops at 1:07:32.

                            It appears the higher the resolution, the larger the file, the earlier the avi stops playing. If I use the play length vs the file length it might show the approximate file size limit and maybe help to find where the issue is with the program.

                            Based on 532x400 working the file limit is > 877,393 KB
                            640x480 1,222,265 KB Play len 1:29:12 / file len 1:43:14 = 89.20/103.23 = 86.4% played * 1222265 KB = 1,056,147 KB
                            720x480 1,360,870 KB Play len 1:20:02 / file len 1:43:14 = 80.00/103.23 = 77.5% played * 1360870 KB = 1,054,631 KB

                            If my calculations are correct there is an AVI size limitation of about 1055 MB on the v8.0.5.3/v8.0.5.6 releases.

                            Does anyone have an avi file created with either of those releases that is greater than 1055 MB and that plays the full length of the movie?

                              Hi, napertivo
                              1. Please set small bit rate to play the file well. Select "Edit"-->"Video Format"-->"Fixed bitrate".
                              Try again.
                              Thanks.
