Bad AV Sync then Converter Freezes

Because of a bad AV sync when ripping from DVD to MP4 ipod, I was told to copy the DVD onto my harddrive then convert to MP4 ipod. The copy plays with AV synced, it is in 4 VOB files. When converter starts it is converting at 300+fps, but, went it gets to 18.34% complete the completion counter stops and the fps begin to decline until they reach zero and the fps counter goes away. Nothing happens for hours and I close down the program.
