13.0.0.4 Request for Advice on "Remux into file" subtitles

    Hi,

Can someone please advise me on which setting I should be used to create a single MKV H265 file which includes selectable subtitles.

I can do this when using StreamFab but when I try to rip a Blu Ray disc using DVDFab, choosing the "Remux into file" option and all three (SRT, VobSub and PGD) subtitle types, none of the files give me the option to show subtitles I try to play them on my smart TV.

I also get a separate SRT subtitle file when I choose the SRT subtitle type which seems like something I should only get if I choose the "Extract to SRT file" option.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

do subtitles show when you preview the created file with dvdfab ??
try using Drect Render to video, but but only works with 1 (one) subtitle file.

Thanks October. Yes, they do show in the preview window and if I use Direct Render To Video but I'm reaching an age where I might need subtitles as my hearing deteriorates. I'm not at that stage yet so having unnecessary subtitles on screen is distracting, so I'm hoping to find a way to be able to turn them on and off as I choose.

Do you have subtitles when playing the file using a software player on your computer?

It could be that your device does not support the subtitle format. Please set it to render to try again.

Thanks both. I'm playing the files via a USB stick, which does allow me to turn the subtitles on and off when I use files created via StreamFab, so I'm assuming that means that my smart TV does support the subtitle format.

As I mentioned above, I know how to directly render subtitles to the films but I want the ability to turn them on and off, e.g. if there's a moment where I can't hear something, it will allow me to put them on for a short period but I don't want to have them on all the time, as it is very distracting to watch a film with subtitles when you don't need them.

I believe it depends on what software is playing your files.
I know Plex will only play SRT subtitles.
I also know that the Remux subtitle into File option does not work very well in Plex.
So I only use either Direct Render to Video or Extract to SRT file options.

Both options work in Plex, but like you said, Direct Render to Video will always show the subtitles. So I only use that option now if I come across a disc that was authored weirdly by the studios to fight Piracy. The recent UHD disc Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) is one such disc. I couldn't get DVDFab to use Extract to SRT File correctly. It kept missing the Forced Subtitles in the movie. So I had to use Direct Render to Video for the forced subtitles to show.

So for me, I only use:
              - Direct Render to Video for just forced subtitles
              - Extract to SRT file for both normal and forced subtitles when the disc is authored correctly
