I am usually the one who makes movie night fun, everyone puts up a movie they would like to see and I make it happen. For instance last Friday night we had about 20 guys and gals in the room for "Tombstone" A great American western, Val Kilmers greatest role. Kurt Russel, Sam Elliot. A star-studded cast and a wonderful movie, thank goodness I had it in 1080p, another guy had a copy on a USB stick in 480p, the difference was astronomical.
Sure looks like you were their huckleberry! You're so right - what used to look good on older TVs now falls sadly short when viewed on the latest models - when I started replacing my not-inconsiderable DVD collection with downloads at the start of the pandemic, I really wasn't aware of how truly extreme the difference between that quality and 1080p was until I experienced the sort of comparison you did.

And I agree that Tombstone is Kilmer's greatest role, even though it's not his personal favorite. If you haven't seen the black comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, you should - Kilmer co-starring with Robert Downey Jr. is a goddamn delight.

I am going to search Kiss Kiss Bang Bang right now, thanks artsunlimited. I love Robert Downey Jr.

EDIT- I just found Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it's really a post-modernistic noir film, and I love it. Have you seen the sine qua non of post-modern noirs, the archetype, the platonic ideal of the genre, what else but The Big Lebowski, one my favs.

"Tombstone" was up against some worthy competition in 1994..... "Schindler's List"..... "The Fugitive"..... "The Remains Of The Day"..... "In The Name Of The Father"..... and "The Piano"..... but I believe it should have at least received a nomination for Best Picture..... and could have won the award.....

People who don't like watching westerns..... liked watching "Tombstone".....

And as for Best Actor..... Val Kilmer may not have been nominated..... but Val Kilmer was the Best Actor in 1994.....

His portrayal of "Doc Holliday" will be remembered for all time.....
