UHD Ripper Compatible Drive for Dell 2019 XPS

    Hi

I purchased the LG BU40N internal drive and then connected it to my Dell XPS with a USB 3.0 to SATA connector (this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073XG1VRG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I haven't been able to get it working with DVD Fab or even other software. I just get lots of read errors. I also tried other software and got similar errors so I think the issue is with the drive or cable rather than DVD Fab

So I am thinking of getting an true external USB drive like the ASUS BW-16D1H-U. I can't enable IDE mode on the XPS so I won't be able to use the firmware downgrade tool. Before I purchase I was looking for some advice on whether this setup should work with my 2019 XPS?

    Thanks

There's no "compatability issue" with the Dell XPS, so just go on Ebay and search for "4k friendly bluray drive USB" there's plenty of pre-flashed drives available. You could also buy a bare drive and get your own SATA-USB enclosure.

The BU40N is on 1.02 firmware which I thought was ok. But when I tried to clone instead of ripping I am getting an error about an unfriendly firmware version meaning it cannot read it. There is no option in the BIOS to change the SATA mode to IDE so I don't think the drive tool is an option for me.

I did manage to use the trial version of DeUHD to rip it to a folder (just 10 minutes of playing time with the trial version) and then used the trial version of DVDFab to clone to an ISO which is nearly 13GB. I tried to then convert that to MKV with the trial DVDFab but although it said it was successful it didn't create a file. But even if I got this to work it seems a bit of a waste to buy two software packages to rip the 4K discs. I would prefer to do everything with DVDFab.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can downgrade the firmware I would be grateful.

        Thanks

        Dave

I think there's something else going on, as far as I know DeUHD and DVDfab drive requirements are identical, so what works with one will work with the other. If it help, I've ripped 120+ 4K discs with DVDfab and an Asus 16D1HT drive. As to downgrade, I sent a drive to someone on Ebay that did the job for 20 pounds, there are a number of people on Ebay that offer that service.

Thanks Procat, I followed your directions and I am now able to use the drive apart from a few glitches.

Occasionally I get a message about an unfriendly firmware even though it is now 1.0 but rebooting seems to solve the this.
If the drive is connected before I start DVDFab then the program hangs on the splash screen. Once I disconnect it then DVDFab launches and I can then reconnect the drive

Both of these are an annoyance but something I can live with.

I managed to rip Solo - Star wars and Spiderman homecoming successfully but I can't seem to rip La La Land which is the only other 4K disc I have access to right now. This continues to give read errors. I've tried cleaning it but still it is not working.

What is also odd is that MakeMkv doesnt recognize that the drive is connected - when I launch it there are no usable drives detected. I think it was seeing it before I downgraded.
