UHD Copy General question

Was contemplating purchasing the UHD copy. But after doing a little reading I'm curious as to whether you can still get drives that will do the work. I don't want to spend the money on it if I can't find a drive, any information would be appreciated.

UHD drives today are all manufactured with firmware that prevents making backups or ripping UHD disk. There are a few options however.

1. Purchase a drive that is compatible with DVDFAB firmware download software. There are still some drives out there you can buy that can be re-flashed by that tool to make them UHD compatible.

2. You can purchase a drive that has already been flashed to be compatible by the vendor. You can find re-flashed drives on EBAY. You can also get them from a vendor that posts on the MAKEMKV forum. However, you should be careful as to what drive you purchase. ASUS and LG drives that are pre-flashed can by used with DVDFAB products. Pre-flashed Pioneer drives, while compatible with most software, are not supported by DVDFAB products.

3. You can get a drive and flash it yourself, assuming you are a bit technically oriented. There is a forum on MAKEMKV web site that has much information on that process. However, exercise caution on this path as you can easily turn your drive into a doorstop.

I have 3 optical drives that have been flashed. I have an ASUS drive (BW-16D1HT SATA) that I flashed using the DVDFAB tool. It works fine and is pretty reliable. I have an ASUS BW-16D1X-U USB drive that actually contains an LG drive inside. I flashed that one myself with help from the folks on the MAKEMKV forum. It also works well. Finally, I have an ASUS BW-16DH1-U USB drive. It has a Pioneer unit inside. I got this one flashed using the MAKEMKV vendor's help. It is the most reliable of the 3, but DVDFAB products will not work with it in UHD mode. They will support backup of standard DVD and Blu-rays though.

I have 3 LG drives that handle 4K/UHD optical discs just fine using DVDFab software: WH16NS60, WH16NS40 & BH16NS40.
If you consider purchasing a LG UHD friendly drive, make sure it has Svc Code NS50 or NS60.
The DVDFab drive tool replaced the firmware in the WH16NS60 & WH16NS40 model drives to permit 4K data handling.
The BH16NS40 drive is basically the same drive in retail packaging and had an older firmware version which did not need to be replaced.
