Okay, as everyone said, just had to bite the bullet and go with one of them.

I appreciate ALL your help and advice, but had to choose, so I went with MSE.

Have now downloaded it, removed McAfee (which did NOT want to go), then installed MSE.

After updating it I did a full scan, taking some 2-3 hours and it picked up what it called 9 severe threats, which McAfee never did, don't know what they were, something about exploit.java.

Now updated and run Malwarebytes and it was happy, see how we go.

    Thank you all again............

PS. Also ran that ''list of antivirus uninstallers and removal tools'' which removed a lot more of McAfee.

Just an update that may (or may not) be of interest to those that helped or anyone else considering similar actions.

Have had MSE now for 3 days, NO problems (so far), it runs out of the way but I have been keeping a close watch on it, checking for updates often, it has only ''activated'' or whatever you want to call it twice, both times when a site was trying to instal something about adaware which MSE considered unsafe.

Thank you all once again for your help and advice.

When you get tired of checking for updates (I did) it will update itself every day and when the tray icon turns orange it's telling you it's time to scan, otherwise I don't even know exists.

Yes I am very pleased with it so far, just I have been checking for updates every couple of hours and when it updates doing a quick scan, just until I get used to it and trust it 100%.

Also been updating and scanning Malwarebytes each day to sort of double check, no problems so far.

Just another update for all those that kindly helped, and anyone interested.

Been another week now, VERY happy with MSE, I do trust it now but still do manual updates several times a day and a full scan daily, also update and do a full scan with Malwarebytes every couple of days.

As before only times it has activated was for this ''adaware'' trying to instal.

Another thing I like about MSE compared to McAfee, not every time but once or twice a week after McAfee did an automatic update it used to insist you restart your computer right away, very annoying sometimes if you were in the middle of doing something with the computer, MSE does not do this, yet anyway.

            Anyway, thanks again..........................

PS. Have not heard from McAfee at all, so that removal tool must have worked too.

davidh this should be interesting for you to look at http://malwareresearchgroup.com/2011...test-22072011/
Its why i recomended avast to you plus the fact of at least two updates per day, faster scanning speeds and for me MSE was using about 40+ meg of ram compaired to avast using 4-6 meg.

Appreciate all the feedback and advice.

Just read that, it is comparing the paid version of Avast though (I think) NOT the free version.

I am reluctant to change from MSE now to the free version of Avast, and as I said before I also update and run a full scan of Malwarebytes every couple of days, and it did very well in those tests.

I believe it was the free version of avast that was tested there and the stucture of that test would have been the same result for avast free or paid, MSE completly flopped on this test as it also did not fair well in the latest av comparatives test and VB 100 tests but the choice is yours, im just trying to steer you in the direction of a more efficient antivirus product.

Okay, thank you, appreciate your advice, just I am reluctant to change something that is working so well, think I will stay with MSE for now.

                      Exactly.
I happen to prefer and use avast myself, but that doesn't make it "better".

Exactly so, I was an Aircraft Engineer all my working life (retired now), and that always served me well with aircraft too.

Just did an update and full scan with Malwarebytes, which had perfect results on that site, and no problems, so will stick with MSE for now, but sincerely appreciate all the advice and input.

Okay, it ain't broke, working well, Malwarebytes confirming no nasties been let in.

BUT, it has started doing something the last few days, NOT the end of the World, but I was hoping some of you that have MSE might have an idea?

I still do manual updates several times a day, just to make sure, and although it is set to scan once a week automatically, I ususally do at least a quick scan every day.

Quite a few times lately it turns orange, says computer is NOT safe because I have NOT done a scan for some time, even once or twice when I had done a scan only hours before?

It does seem to be especially IF my server has been lost for a while?

                          Any ideas PLEASE?

You have to do a full scan every so often or that will happen.

Okay, thank you for the very prompt reply.

I do full scans too, but not every day, it must be looking at when you have done FULL scans, and no amount of quick scans will do.

                              Thanks again.

Maybe it requires a full scan after a certain number of quick scans? I might do one or maybe two quick scans a week and a full scan Sunday night. Never hear from it anymore.
