    Hi brasstownjim,
Please update your fab to the latest version 8181 and try it again.
If it fails to open the DVD, please try disable PathPlayer in common settings-> DVD / Blu-ray->PathPlayer. Wish it helps.

If your VHS tapes have Macrovision protection, the Meritline product may not defeat it. I just used the video stabilizer to transfer some Disney tapes we had and it worked great.

I have the same DVD recorder as the OP. The unit I am suggesting does not require software installation because it doesn't use the computer (It's VCR to DVD recorder). Run both audio cables from the VCR to the 430. Then, run a cable for video from the VCR to the stabilizer's "In" connection and run a cable from the "Out" connection of the stabilizer to the video in on the 430.

as I think about this you are still cappturing the macrovision unless the toshiba 430 is what stops recording anyway around this?

some tapes record using toshiba 430 how is that?

If the tape has Macrovision copy protection, you will not be able to transfer the tape. If the tape is not copy protected, it will transfer without any problems. Not all retail tapes have protection but many do. If the device you purchase to remove the protection does it's job, the copy will no longer have the protection.

Just to let you know, there are other products out there such as the Grex but it is a more expensive ($100).

Grex - advanced digital video stabilizer with high quality S-Video support. Remove Macrovision Protection

Which ever way your friend goes, keep in mind that the resolution will be standard definition and will be noticeably different from what you've come to expect from a DVD. All you are doing is transferring the contents from a tape to a disc.

I absolutely agree with Jeffie. There have been a number of devices on the market that will remove macrovision from VHS.
However, this is not the hot topic it once was. Hence, your options are more limited than previously.

Back in the dark ages, I was doing this with a combo VHS/DVD recorder. I think it was a Sanyo, but it's long gone at any rate.
It did a great job removing macrovision where others did not.

I also had a LiteOn 5005 with modified firmware that did the job.

The stabilizer Jeffie suggested has a good track record as well as the
Sima GoDVD (sorry I don't recall the model).

Regardless, these units will be harder to come by these days...meaning you'll probably be buying from resellers...maybe refurbished or used.
Additionally, I understand he doesn't want to repurchase the same content he already has on VHS, but I can't stress enough, it's going to be a big disappointment re: quality.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow. | Lauren Bacall | "To Have and Have Not" (1944).

I sent a PM asking where you're located. If you are in the U.S. and are interested, contact me. If you mail me a protected tape, I will transfer it to DVD and mail both the tape and the disc back to you (at my expense).

I have used programs such as Handbrake but I will not re-encode the disc as I don't think the quality of the transferred video will be improved. Then, your friend can decide if purchasing the necessary equipment and time required is worth it.

The igraber hooks up from your VHS player to your PC via USB and then you just play the tape and the program copies it and burns it to a DVD, it's no different than having the VHS player hooked up to your TV and playing the tape
