Thinking of picking up a new BluRay burner what do u reccommend?

I have a bluray burner that does a good job on DVDs, but blurays... not so much...
It an LG model that died quickly.. has no support... no firmware updates.. etc...

So, not wanting to over-spend on another burner... does anyone have any recommondations for bluray burners? (internal/external... I dont care.. just so it works)

There are a bunch of lowerpriced ones on but I dont want to buy so cheap that I run into bad quality issues again...

My media that I'm using is the Optical Quantum (25GBs)
(which many people say is good media to use.. been thru a 25pk or two of those)

I'm very happy with the performance of the LG WH12LS39 (both of them) and exclusively use Verbatim BD-R (6X).

I refuse to support Sony because of their leadership role in legislation designed to male our lives more difficult.

I for sony.. one against sony.. one for LG... and I have heard things to stay away from LG.
It would be easier if everyone would just agree on a model. lol

Looks like I may have to just get one.. and try it out I guess.

Attached is a picture of what is happening to my burns on my LG.
(This pic is a more 'extreme' case as I burned it at max speed.)
Normally I like to burn at 1 or 2x because the quality of the burn is better (deeper, whatever you want to call it)

          Notice the rings I get.
On a 1 or 2x burn.. I might get one bad spot...

          Its just not right.

I also have 50GB Verbatim discs that I was using for backing up my 3D discs. but they too seem to be getting lots of rings lately.

That is why I'm looking at the burner.
LG - BH12L38 is what I have.. firmware doesnt go past 1.00

Maybe I'll hit best buy today.. that way I can just return the drive if it doenst perform how it want it to...

My issue against Sony is strictly political. I do not want to reward a company for their bad behavior.

I'm using a Lite-On and it works great. Had it since December 2011. No issues.

I do not have a lot of experience yet with Blu-ray burners, but I have been using an ASUS BW-12B1ST that I got at Newegg for about $50 on sale. So far I have burned about 25 BD-Rs without a single coaster.

I regularly need to replace my DVD burners due to worn out lasers, so I try not to use this one for anything but BDs just because BD burner prices are still so high. DVD-R DL blanks require such high power that I burn out the lasers in a couple of hundred discs, no matter what brand burner I buy (do not have the same problem with DVD5, just DVD9 blanks). But at least the standard DVD burners are now cheap. I have no idea what life to expect out of a BD burner yet.

Uh... lasers wear out on burners? Never heard of that before..

Yes, the LED output gets weak from use. The higher output demanded, the faster it happens.

And burning a disc takes much more power at high speed than it does at slow speed, simply because each 'spot' is under the laser for much shorter periods of time; therefore, the laser must be much stronger to get a proper burn. And burning any DL disk takes MUCH more power. The fact that more power is needed at higher speeds also explains why disc problems that are related to a weak or poor burner (and not the blank) usually show up near the outside of the disc, where the surface of the disc is passing under the laser much faster than the inside cylinders do at the same disc speed.

This information is not too hard to find with a google search if you want more details. Bottom line is that if you do a lot of burning, you should always use the slower speeds and avoid DL discs.

Update to my previous post: Finding information on how burn speed affects laser power and life expectancy of a burner is more difficult than I thought. I went back to find links to the information I had on this, and most of it is from around 2006; therefore, maybe it is no longer such a big deal? It is easy to find info showing how much more power the LEDs use at higher speeds and with DL media, but nobody seems to be talking about laser burnout any more.

But the fact remains that I still see the issue, even with burners that are less than three years old. I just replaced two of them that started having problems near the end of DL discs, and the new burners are having zero problems with the same blanks. So the pattern seems to be continuing for me.

As I have said before, I find it critical to review the chapters near the end of any burned disc, and ESPECIALLY a burned DL disc, on a standalone DVD/BD player before deciding that the archive is good. Just because the burn went without errors does NOT mean the playback will always work. This is how I have found every burner that started getting weak, and therefore kept from filing away lots of bad discs that I would have cursed at years later when I might have tried to play them back.

The last part that you metion about '...the last few chapters...' is what is happening to me.

What you say makes sense... and my burner is a couple years old and has LOTS of miles on it... maybe its time to swap out...

Ordered an Asus 12x burner from Tiger direct for $89 - and supposedly has a $20 rebate.

We'll see how good this one is.

Been using it for a couple weeks now, and have not had the problems I had with the previous burner. If I look at the underside of the disc after a burn, I can still make out burn rings.. (slightly)

But now its hard to compare apples to apples, because my 3D Samsung Player took a crap and I picked up a Panasonic 3D player in place... and I absolutely love it.
(Except that it has Cinavia protection on it)
Samsungs were a pain with the internet apps and features.. .My samsung had a hard time with discs that had slight 'burn rings' in the discs...

This player plays all of my discs that had problems in the samsung and the internet / apps works way better than the samsung.

So... Asus 12x burner = great! (and cheap thru tiger direct)
and Panasonic player = great! (Cinavia protection doesnt bother me too much at this point, its mostly on Sony movies, which I dont own many of - so I dont have to worry about making backups of those)
