Initial Disk Scan...

I've noticed that with the last few versions of DVDfab the initial scan on the Blu-ray disk has been taking a long time. This is the scan that happens after you first put the disk in the drive.

I tried to backup Safe House last night, and even after two hours the initial scan didn't complete, this is with 8.1.9.6.

I used 8.0.8.5 which scanned the disk in about five minutes and carried on to do a successful backup.

As I said at the start, I don't think it's a problem with Safe House, as other Blu-ray disks have been taking ten or fifteen minutes sometimes for this initial scan, which seems longer than they used too.

I will monitor the next few backups I do and see how it goes...

Are you talking about the scan to open the disc or the scan after it's been opened. They both seem slower to me but the 2nd scan, the one after the disc has been opened has gotten a lot slower than it used to be.

Yep, I'm finding pretty much the same thing, ie.,
8196 is substantially slower than 8085

Personally, I never wait for the scan anyway.
I just verify it is in process and go ahead and rip.

Never had a problem and my rip time does not appear to be affected.
Usual time for BD main movie is ~ 30-35 minutes.

I cloned Safe House region "A" in just under 46 minutes using 8.1.8.7 and an LG Reader. I have not tried 8.1.9.6 so I am not sure what problem you ran into. Perhaps there is some setup difference in 8.0.8.5 compared to 8.1.9.6 that made the older version work.

Generally, I start the clone process as soon as the blue progress box disappears. I only wait for the "analysis" to finish when I think the main movie might just fit on a 25gb disk. If the blue progress box takes more than 3 passes then something is usually wrong with the disk. I have a bottle of "cd cleaning" fluid and "rejuvinating" fluid that seem to work. If that does not work I try a LiteOn and then a Samsung BD reader before giving up.

This problem is not easily repeatable. Sometimes the scan works fine and other times it fails. I have 8198 running on two systems, a file server and a development system with MS debug 1.2 and MS VS8.

On the file server I was easily able to clone Scorpion King 3. I then attempted to extract the main movie. The size was shown as N/A which is incorrect and no scan was initiated which is contrary to 8187. I then did the "NEXT" and it started analysis at 0% complete and after about 5 minutes I gave up and canceled as it was not making any progress.

I then put the BluRay (SK3) into my development system and without bothering to do a clone I directly tried to extract the main movie (english for me). This worked fine. It showed about 72% for size and after only a few seconds I clicked on "NEXT" and the analysis started with %100 and it only took a few seconds to get to part 2 where it started decoding. In other words, the same extraction worked fine on this system with the same 8198.

I then went back to my file server and tried 3 more times. I brought up 8198 and if it showed "N/A" for size then I exited and restarted . On the 3th try it worked correctly and size was %72 and it started at %100 like my other computer.

I then went back to my development system and enabled MS debug 1.2 for access violation by any process. I then tried running 8198 on that SK3 movie to see if it would fail. About the 2nd time I ran 8198 I got an error reported from MSdebug 1.2 which cannot be attached to this post as it is a web archive. I put it here if anyone wants to look at it.

[EDIT] While that blue progress bar is up, DVDFab is phoneing home as it normal. Perhaps there is some intermittant problem accesing its server???

I tried Amadeus last night and the scan ran four hours without finishing.

I reverted back to 8.0.8.5 and everything was fine.

There is something very odd going on here.

I had no problem with 8.1.8.7 and I am glad I kept a copy as it seems impossible here to download previous beta versions. I don't know why they have a beta release forum but every post points to the most recent beta. At least they give the history of the previous versions.

Do you occasionally see that N/A "size" when selecting main movie or full disk? Starting with 8.1.9.x I noticed that the size was not always displayed. I ran a bunch of GPU tests using 8185 and the size was always visible. 8187 also showed the size. I need that info because if the compression ratio is less than 100% then it wont fit on a 25gb and I must cancel all my BOINC GPU tasks before starting the compression. DVDFab and BOINC require exclusive use of GPU resources when FAB is doing encoding.

Been doing some testing...

Re-installed 8.1.9.0, this is the last official release with the scanning working. Amadeus scanned and backed up correctly.

8.1.9.6 and 8.1.9.8 don't work correctly.

Maybe 8.2.0.0 will be an overhaul and it will work.

BeemerBiker, I did notice the size wasn't showing correctly on one of the versions, I don't remember which one though. I think it was a beta, but I'm not 100% sure.

8.1.9.0 seems to work fine at this point.

8.0.8.5 has never let me down if the newer version has failed.

I think we're all good.
