This is a result of bitrate (kbps) and frame resolution. I find anything above 0.2xx gives acceptable color depth, more is better but there is a file size consideration. I think if you keep it above 0.2 you'll like it on a hand held device.
How much do you need to get clean pristine conversions of ole B&W classics
1. to kill a mockingbird
2. casablanca
3. citizen kane etc?
Clean pristine means same as original.

I keep my B&W bit depth about the same as color ollie. It keeps the black from fading to gray and the demarcation lines between those two colors crisp.
