Blu-ray copy / MKV problem - guru may be needed

    Curious problem ...

I use [other software] to back up my movies to play through network player.
I use Blu-ray copy to back up to disc. I figured that if I ever lost a HDD I could use the BD-r that I backed up with Fab and convert to MKV again.

Here is the issue ... I noticed that if I use Blu-ray copy to back up a movie that has a DTS HD master audio track with the DTS core imbedded within it, then [other software] will NOT be able to read that copy (either from the HDD or from a BD-R). However [other software] will read a direct rip (or an [other software] rip) of that same disc, no problem.

The issue is with the audio track. If I remove HD audio, then [other software] has no problem with the copy made with DVD FAB Blu-ray copy.

I have not checked with back up of a movie that contains Dolby True HD with embedded core audio. But if the original contains a seperate HD audio track, ie. a seperate LPCM track (either Dolby or DTS) then [other software] has no problem with a Blu-ray copy back-up.

I hope the above made sense. Are there some settings I may be missing within Blu-Ray copy? Is this a known issue maybe?

Blu-ray Ripper MKV module a shot?

Hey, Laudanum, instead of [other software], why not give DVDFab Blu-ray Ripper MKV Module a shot, which you have 30 days trial for free?

WDTV Live + Which I know doesnt support most or all HD audio formats, atleast not within MKV container. But I try to keep the HD audio for the future for either a Blu-ray player or a different Network media player (considering the Dune). I dont have HDMI capability with my current HT receiver either. But it does have HD audio capability through 7.1 ch. analog inputs which would be compatible with the Dune and some of the better Blu-ray players with internal HD audio decoding and d/a conversion.. Plus, I will update the HT receiver in the near future.

I may look at that. But I am familiar with [other software] and like the program. This is the only issue I have had with it so far.

I should have mentioned that it is only when I use Blu-ray copy's video compression. I copy movie only and compression is around 90% or better then I keep HD audio. If no compression is needed then [other software] has no problem dealing with the FAB files. And again, it is only with discs in which core audio is embedded within the HD master audio (DTS). I haven't checked the True HD titles yet. But DTS HD MA with embedded core audio is pretty prevalent so this is an issue Id like to solve if possible.

Also, I often use [other software] to compress MKV. [other software] has no issue with reading the same compressed FAB back-ups that [other software] can't open. However, [other software] doesnt deal with most or all HD audio. So, I often mux in the HD audio from the [other software] output as [other software] doesn't have any problems with HD audio. Its easier than using separate programs to demux the HD audio etc. etc. Its the way I have been doing for a while now it and it has worked well for me with the exception of this issue.

Yes, in a M2Ts and some other containers. But is it now HD audio capable within the MKV container?

Very cool. DTS HD as well? or only Dolby TrueHD?

i believe the only thing it can't pass through to your receiver is DTS HD MA
