Burned BD50s don't play correctly: Inception & Deathly Hallows

I am trying to create a "Main Movie" copy of Inception but so far I have burned two BD50s and they both exhibit the same problems. I am using ImgBurn to burn the discs. The discs are being played back on a Sony 7000ES Blu-Ray changer.

The problem is that near some chapter boundaries (but not all) I will lose the very end of the chapter, then the next chapter starts sometimes with video/audio out of sync which lasts for about 30 seconds then corrects itself.

I ripped Inception (main movie) to disk, then burned my copies from there. I am using Verbatim BD50s. I ensure that nothing else is running on the system during the burn. On the second burn I turned on verify and it claimed that the disc verified correctly (logs attached). Also on the second burn I attempted to set the burn speed to 2x but ImgBurn ignored me and burned it at 6x anyway. I now know how to set ImgBurn so that it will really use 2x for this media.

Given that I have had two burns fail in nearly identical ways (in the same places) and that the second burn "verified" as good, is this really an issue with burn speed or did it not rip correctly? Anyone else have trouble ripping an accurate uncompressed copy of Inception? Before I create yet another $9 BD coaster I want to know if burn speed truly is the issue here. I have limited playback capabilities on the machine itself.

I have had similar issues with Deathly Hallows Pt 1.

That's kind of odd. I burned Inception to a bd50 no problems. But i used an older version of fab. I think 8.0.7.3. I usually read the entire movie or disc to an ISO uncompressed to my hdd. then i play the ISO using dvdfab virtual drive to see if there are any issues. Then burn back with imgburn. Then I check the burned disc again on my computer to see if there are any issue again. Did you play the file on your computer to see if the rip had problems before your burned it?

I'm using Bluray copy to write the files directly out to disc. It doesn't create an ISO for me. Then I use Bluray copy again to start up ImgBurn.

The machine I use for ripping and burning won't play the m2ts files correctly (inadequate video card). But tonight I am going to try to copy at least some of the chapters over to a computer that can, to see if they were ripped right.

I moved the first 7 m2ts files (chapters?) over to my Mac and successfully played then with VLC. No audio sync issues and no dropped segments. Looks like the movie was ripped correctly and my issues lie solely with burning. This is good news as those issues are probably solvable.

I think I'm going to try packaging it up in an ISO and burning from that using a slower speed.

Tried reading your ImgBurn log but it wasn't formatted properly, almost impossible to read but I did see this:
          19:48:10 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 53,948 KB/s (12x), Got: 26,970 KB/s (6x)

Click the link in my sig to see how to set up the AWS (automatic write speed) for ImgBurn per MID (blank disc)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66Ds96-pwLc here's a youtube video that shows you how to configure Fab to work with ImgBurn, also how to set the AWS. Pause the video because it's rather fast and take your time.

I think your drive has a firmware update also, open ImgBurn>click the mode tab at top>select write. Then make sure your drive is selected in the dropdown>right click on it and scroll down to "check for firmware updates" I think it will take you to where version 1.03 is available, your drive has 1.00 installed.

              Hi wnl256
I agree with my friend W&B you are burning way to fast, please slow down you burn speed to 4X and make sure to set up the AWS in ImgBurn to burn at the correct speed.

Note If you do not know how to flash your drive do not do it, it will render your drive useless, if you have doubts maybe ask a friend to help.

Yes W&B it is a mess, but I took the liberty of fixing their logs, this it what it will look like see pics

                Thanks W&B.

I know about burning too fast, but want to make sure there aren't any other issues before I try again at a slower speed. I did figure out how to get ImgBurn to slow down, but only after I made the second disc and saw that it was still going at 6x. I'm not in any particular hurry, so am thinking of just burning at 2x to be extra sure.

Firmware upgrade: Sony has version 1.04 on their website. I downloaded it but am always very cautious about doing firmware upgrades, because it's a great way to turn a useful device in to a brick. The instructions just say "run this .exe." Hopefully it is that simple.

Sorry about the logs. I cut and paste from an RDP session in to a Mac and forgot that the Mac has different line endings.

I've created an ISO of Inception, took the 2+ hours to transfer it to the Mac (first time I've missed having a gigabit network), but VLC won't play it. I guess the only way to tinker with this is to keep burning expensive BD50s.

More results, and they are not good news.

First, the drive's firmware has been successfully upgraded to 1.03. But I did notice that the Sony website has 1.04 on it. Still contemplating whether I should put that on.

Second, whenever I attempt to burn using DVDFab (which is configured to use ImgBurn as its burn engine), the speed ends up being 6x. Doesn't matter how I have ImgBurn configured or what I set the burn speed to in DVDFab: it still tries to burn at 6x. So I tried a different workflow.

To avoid burning up expensive BD50 discs, I re-ripped the first 5 chapters only of Inception so that it would fit on a BD25 (and would be done faster). I ripped the first 5 chapters of the main title to an ISO (using DVDFab). Then I fired up ImgBurn directly and told it to burn the ISO to disc. It burned at 4x and verified as being correct.

But the disc still doesn't play right. It plays all of the first file (00001.m2ts) then skips the first 15 seconds (or so) of the next file (00004.m2ts), plays the remaining few seconds of it, then when it starts on the third file (00009.m2ts) the audio stays out of sync for about 30 seconds. This is a nearly identical failure to the last two discs which were burned from a different rip.

I'm pretty much at wits end. Is it possible my machine just isn't fast enough to burn a Bluray? It is a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 with 1.5G of RAM (Windows XP sp3). What I find especially troubling is that the disc verifies as being correct yet still doesn't play right. A problem with the player? I don't have another Bluray player to try these discs out in.

Logs attached, hopefully readable this time.

Any ideas or tips are greatly appreciated.

Pick up 1 or 2 BDRE saves allot of headaches! Copy your file to the HDD and open up ImgBurm as a stand alone burner
                    For Win7 C:\Users\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
                    or Vista C:\Users\User Name\Documents\DVDFab\Log

                      Hi wnl256

First off I would update the firmware on your player.
Second do as DiabloZoe suggests and get a BD RE so you do not waste disc's.
As far as the burn speed goes with Fab do you have the speed set to Recommended if not set it to that and when ImgBurn opens up it should burn at the AWS you set it up with.

EDIT: Also update to the newest release found here

                      Hope this helps

I found the cause of the problem!!! Moving back to an older version of DVDFab makes the problem go away.

Early on in this thread btufail mentioned that he was able to successfully make a copy of Inception using version 8.0.7.3. Then I read this other thread:

Based on that information I downgraded to DVDFab version 8.0.7.3 and was able to burn a properly working disc (in this case of the first 5 chapters of Inception). Rip speed is pathetically slow, but the results work. One of the posters in the other thread mentioned that he still had issues with 8.0.9.2. So I think I will stick with the older version until I hear that this has been resolved.

I saved the old logs and non-functional ISOs if anyone from Fengtao is interested. Would like to try a copy of 8.0.7.9 but I wasn't able to find one (oldapps.com doesn't have it).

CBR929, thanks for the suggestions. I've already upgraded the firmware in the player but the issue remained. I will buy a BDRE tomorrow (should have done that from the beginning). Even with ImgBurn running at 4x I still saw the problem. The solution was going back to DVDFab 8.0.7.3. And from what is said in the other thread it sounds like 8.0.9.2 still has this issue.

Best way to narrow down the problem is to play the original and see how it plays.

Glad you found a solution by going back a few versions.
Remember that they are no longer supported and the oldapps link you will not find Beta releases only Official releases.

Glad it is working for you
