I have been using a slim writer (HP 556s) for about a year or so without any problems at all, I use it a lot and it works great so I hope that this one isn't one of those "problematic" units mentioned. I can't remember what I paid for it but it was under $50 and I have no complaints whatsoever (so far that is). However, I am not disputing the point that frull size drives are better, I really don't know.
