Uninstall it from device manager, reboot and let windows install the native bus master controller. I don't know if that is the problem, but I know the NVIDIA controllers are problematic.

And as 90312 said, be certain to uninstall from device manager. The idea is to prevent the nVidia controller from reinstalling.
You definitely want the native Windows drivers. I read something on this a few years ago...I'll try to find it, but I think this will work.

Hi.

This pc is only designed for vista, and has no xp drivers other than these.
When I first put xp on this pc I had no drivers and had to post on another forum for advise. They said these "Generic" drivers were the only ones I could use for xp.

This pc will not automatically install drivers as their are none available for xp, atleast thats what I've been told.

Is the ata controller for internet? If this does not work will I lose my internet connection?

I was afraid of this. I wish I could remember what I can't remember.
I've never tried this utility...drivesweeper, but I've heard good things about it. It works on chipset drivers as well as display drivers.

I was looking over your thread. You have a dual boot system, correct?
Am I correct to assume you only have the proprietary installation discs for this system?
Did you just downgrade to XP?

Any chance you have an external case for a dvd drive?
With this you could put the litey in an ext case, and plug it into a usb 2.0 port.
This drive would then connect by means of the usb controller and not the nVidia controller.

Do you have another burner? One with a PATA (IDE) interface

Yes I downgraded to xp because vista is far to slow on my pc.
Yes its dual core processor.

I dont have an external case for a dvd burner but I could get one depending on price.
I have the burner that came with the pc, but it stopped working. I cant exactly remember what was wrong with it, I think it may have been getting errors while burning or something.

Do you have both Vista and XP installed in separate partitions?
This will enable you to boot from either OS.

It sounds like you only have the Compaq install discs.
Meaning you don't have a clean MS Vista or MS XP disc, correct?

Ext cases are pretty cheap.

With an external case, you can pop in an internal burner...much cheaper and many more to select from. And at any point in time, you can put the burner in the computer case if you wish.

Does the semi-dead burner (the old one) have an IDE interface (IDE connections)?

Hi the windows vista disc I have is genuine and came with the pc. The xp disc is my ex girlfriends and is genuine aswell, for 3 computers.
Neither disc comes with drivers I have to install all that myself. Vista installs all the drivers for the pc when I boot up, xp I have to install those generic ones myself.
The new one has 2 long thin chords very similar in shape, the older ones chords are differemt. It will not attach to this pc anymore, 1 chord has 4 holes in it (Power chord) and the other about 4 cm wide with many little holes, similar to a printer cable.
I believe one is sata and the other I wouldnt have a clue. When I got the new burner installed, I believe he replaced the chords, because I am unable to plug the old burner in anymore.

As are we. This can be a very complex process and becomes exceedingly difficult since you're there and we're not. Everyone's system is different by virtue of hardware and software installs and configurations.
I'm not complaining mind you. As I said, you've been outstanding in your willingness to plow through this, but this is what it is.

Your motherboard has a an IDE connector so it is certainly possible to connect a burner with an IDE interface to it. It also has 4 SATA sockets, one of which is occupied by your litey.

An IDE cable, often called a ribbon cable, is a wide flat cable.
It will be a 40 pin and almost all modern cables are 80 wire (as opposed to 40 wire...not pins...they all have 40 pins).
These are very cheap...$3-$4 here in the US.

You can reinstall your old burner (we don't know if it works though), perhaps borrow a burner form your girlfriend or purchase another burner. Good burners can be had over here for $25-$30 and about the same or less for an external case.

I'm not understanding what's up with your XP disc. As 90312 said, the drivers are native, ie., are part of the operating system. If you have an XP disc, they're there.

The power cord for an IDE drive is the 4-pin connector you spoke of...
The other cables are SATA. They are thicker and much narrower than the ribbon cable . The power cable is the wider of the two. They can be round, but most likely are not.
