speed up the rip time

    i've heard on this forum and would like to double check the opinions of you all:

    is it a safe bet to burn at half the speed of what the disks are?

    i have 16x taiyo yuden SL dvd+r - so i burn at 8x.

    if i get 8x taiyo yuden SL dvd+r - should i burn at 4x??

        Dorrell another thought in Fab go into settings DVD/Blu-Ray write and click set book type to DVD-ROM.
        Even if it's a little thing, do something for those who have need of help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

            With todays burners and good quality media you can still get good burns at a faster speed, I use Verbatim SL 16X and burn those at 12X and for DL 8X I burn at 6X but 1/2 speed is OK if you want but the only way to be sure is to experiment with the burn speeds as with todays good burners I don't believe the 1/2 speed is valid anymore, Just my thought on this

              Last year I spent a lot of time and disc running test of burn speeds and running quality test on the results.

              Verb 16X SL..

              4X --- crap.
              8X----good.
              12X---excellent.
              16X ----hit and miss quality with coasters thrown in.

              I never recommend using half speed due to the results of my own testing.

                Thanks for the information as I only use Verbatim SL-R 16x and will do some testing of my own, agreed if using quality media I should be able to burn at 12x. Again thanks. CBR929

                  Trying to give a one answer fits all, can get pretty dicey.

                  When folks post less than adequate details, like no MID, no burner make, model, firmware, no burn log, yada, yada, yada...
                  trying to suggest a one anwer fits all, is a lesson in frustration.
                  In these cases, I believe suggesting 1/2 the max speed is a reasonable starting point.

                  But, I totally agree with you guys. I don't use 1/2 max speed at all, but then again, I'm not just looking for a starting point.

                  For eg., with one of my Sony-Optiarc 7240s (mod firmware 1.01, bitsetting for +R, +RW, +R DL and rpc-1), I use the following auto set speeds with Img.

                  YUDEN000 T02 (8X +R) -----> burn @ 8X

                  MCC 004 (16X +R) ---------> burn @ 12X

                  MKM 001 (2.4-4X +R DL)----> burn @ 4X

                  MKM 003 (up to 10X) ------> burn @ 8X

                  Can I burn faster or slower?... sure, but these speeds yield perfect results for me and never cause problems.

                  There's no substitute for doing your own testing. There are are far too many variations in systems, settings and media.
                  No one should be attempting video archiving with crappy or marginal media anyway, but that's a whole 'nother story.

                        My last post wasn't directed at you. It was more of a response to the other members recent posts.
                        Sorry if it seems we've strayed from your problem.

                        So what's happening now?
                        Your burn speed and time seem ok, but the burn speed hasn't been a problem if I recall correctly
                        BTW, you can't bitset -R media, so as long as your using these verbs, it's N/A.

                        How are your rip speeds?
                        Has anything made a difference and what have you tried?

                          I think this thread has become extremely long winded and think it is also time that the OP started doing some figuring for himself instead of the barrage of continual questions.
