Polaroid recorded DVD's don't burn correctly

Thread title should say don't 'rip' correctly.

Hi, I've got a Polaroid DRM-2001G DVD Recorder with 80GB Hard Drive. The specs say the recording format is "DVD, MPEG-II ". I can play the DVD's with Windows Media Center but they are not ripped correctly in DVDFab. I get the 'completed' message within 3 seconds and when I look at the file sizes most are much smaller than the originals. I've had the problem on both Vista and 7 machines and can rip commercial DVD's without a problem on either. Here's part of the log:

    2m 39.26s: got copyright 0 0
    2m 39.69s: got udf/iso
    2m 40.46s: got discinfo
    2m 40.46s: pathplayer enabled
    2m 40.58s: got dvdinfo

    DVDFab 7.0.8.2 (2010/07/26 20:18:10)

    0m 00.39s: option dvd2dvd 1 dvd2mobile 1 bluray2bluray 1 bd2mobile 1 file2mobile 1 filemover 1

Is the 'got copyright 0 0' normal? Are there any debugging options that would give more detail?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi whittler
Try opening Fab click the little Green checkmark > path player and disable it and try again, but make sure to set it back to enable when done

You should not need to use fab to copy these disks as they have no protection to be defeated.

Just use any disk copying software that should have come with your burner

Why not use the software that came with the Polaroid DRM-2001G DVD Recorder with 80GB Hard Drive to make more DVDs? I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG680 with 120 GB HDD and the software that came with it works great but then if I not use the software the files are in little chunks and not like they should be.

Thanks for the responses. I should have included that I'm just trying to copy the recordings to a NAS device - not to another DVD. I tried disabling the Path Player option and that didn't work. I didn't know I could just copy the files since there is no copy protection - this will work for me. Maybe a future release will handle the way my Polaroid writes the files. Thanks.

Hi again, I tried copying the VOB files direcly from the DVD to NAS directory. Then I learned that the VOB files don't correspond to the episodes/chapters that I had burned to the DVD. It appears they get split up over the 1gig VOB file size. So I am back to asking why certain DVDs can't be handled by DVDFab. I've noticed that in either the Full-Disk or Customize sections I never see the chapters listed. Is there any easily understood documentation on how DVD's are constructed? I've found various websites that all seem too detailed, referring to the ISO standards. -Rod

Simple answer is that your recorder is recording in a format that is not fully DVD compliant. This is very common with recorders.

The VOB's are correct at ~1Gb and chapter marks should be held in the IFO files, not the VOB's.

Try playing the FOLDER with VLC and see if there are actual chapters held within the structure.

If you wish to understand the DVD structure, you have a steep learning curve ahead of you. It took me years!!!

If you have a IFO file click that to play as it contains all info you need like GregiBoy already mentioned

I found a program called FixVTS that corrects the IFO (I'm guessing). In any case I've been able to use DVDFab on the files that FixVTS outputs. Last test will be to see if I can stream them from my Synology NAS to my Asus O!play box. Thanks for all the tips. -Rod
