DVD Ripper 8.1.5.9qt Sync Audio/Video Problem

Tonight I experimented with ripping regular DVDs to something other than VOB passthroughs. I would like to rip them m2ts files using the m2ts.ac3.high_quality profile. When I use it, I am seeing the exact same type of problem the Blu-Ray ripper had up until release 8.1.5.2, the audio/video get progressively out of sync towards the end of the rip. I also tried the m2ts.audiocopy.high_quality profile and see the same thing. With the VOB passthrough profile the audio/video remain in sync.

Here's the logs for the two m2ts and the VOB passthrough rip.

    Hi jbinkley60
Do you have the same sync problems with Cuda turned off ????
Even if it's a little thing, do something for those who have need of help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

I turned off CUDA and the result was the same.

In doing more testing, the problem has gone away. I've verified the settings are the same but in testing 5 more DVDs, including the originals when the problem was occurring, the sync problem is gone. I am not exactly sure what changed but I'll continue trying to reproduce it again. The rips I have successfully completed are great. The m2ts format is so much better for my Netgear streamer box than VOBs.

Ok, after much more testing, I've been able to recreate the problem. It appears to be related to specific DVDs and how the video is formatted. The two which consistently fail are The Other Guys and Clueless. Below are the Mediainfo outputs from two that fail consistently with sync issues between the video and the audio when using any of the m2ts formats. VOBs are fine with both.

I've continued to do more testing and am seeing a direct correlation between when Media Info shows the odd video bitrate values and when DVDFab gets out of sync between the audio and video. If Media Info says a DVD is in the normal 3900 to 6500 kbps DVDfab will rip with the m2ts profiles fine. If is comes up with the high values like these and another dozen I have tested, the audio and video will be out of sync with m2ts profiles. In all cases the VOB profile works fine.

Am wondering if it is the variable bit rate encoding that is causing the issue. Are the movies that do encode ok variable bit rate or constant? Maybe you could you post the MediaInfo for one of those movies that does works ok?

It isn't the variable bit rate. Here's a couple I just completed and they were fine.

I've retested with 8.1.6.1 qt on a few different DVDs. If I turn off CUDA and use software only, the audio and video are almost perfectly in sync. You can still see a slight sync problem at the end where the audio leads the video. If I turn CUDA on it is more pronounced but not nearly as much as 8.1.5.9 . So 8.1.6 1qt is much better but we're not quite there yet.

Again it is only on DVDs where Mediainfo shows the unusual bitrates for the DVD,a s mentioned above. I've tried various versions of the m2ts profiles including AC3, audiocopy, normal, high quality etc. The behavior is consistent. VOB passthrough works fine on everything and m2ts works fine on anything with a normal bitrate on Mediainfo.

I retested with 8.1.6.2 and am still seeing a sync issue when ripping certain DVDs with the m2ts profiles. This was another test of the Clueless DVD.

If you turn off Cuda do you have the same results?

I was able to turn off CUDA and finally get 3 rips that were fully in sync for these with oddball bitrates being reported by Mediainfo. It is very sensitive. I can make minor profile changes and get them out of sync again. I am trying to determine which exact setting is causing it. Turning CUDA off definetly makes a difference, as it did with 8.1.61.
