DVD Ripper MKV Remux on WMC

    Hi There,

Just started trialling DVD Ripper. I want to use it to convert my DVD's to MKV for playing in Windows Media Center (7).

I already have a large number of MKV's, mostly high res anime. They all play fine in WMC.

I loaded up a test DVD. I thought I would go with MKV remux as that would give me the best quality. I disabled splitting and left pretty much everything else default.

The file finished and I was able to play in MPC (media player classic) and also Windows Media Player, but for some reason it will not play in Windows Media Center. I don't get an error or anything. It loads the video, but just sits there at a black screen. If I bring up the controls it shows the video sat at 00:00:00 but interestingly shows the correct movie length. Fast forwarding does nothing.

I am currently ripping it again but using H264 and audiocopy.. it'll be a while before I can test it as it's still encoding. The trouble is though that I want the best quality available.

    Any pointers please?

OK, ripped it as a MKV.H264.audiocopy and that won't play in media center either.

So what am I missing? How come other MKV's play fine, but anything made by DVDRipper does not?

    any help appreciated.

Please try the profile generic.mkv.h264.aac. With it helps.

Unfortunately the same result.. it just refuses to play it. It plays fine in Media Player Classic, just not in Windows Media Center.

I've tried changing codec packs and that makes no difference.

I'm at a loss. This software has so much potential for me.. sadly wont be buying it though if it doesnt work

I wonder if you add Shark Codecs to your computer if that will fix your problem. Media Centre has one of the best GUI's I've seen for this type of thing and some great features but it is such a pain in the butt with it's fussyness as to what it wants to play. Even it's recorded TV programs need to be massaged to play on anything outside Windows. I have been all through this in my early days of Media Players and as much as I liked the interface I soon gave up on Media Centre and have never looked back. Still I'm fairly certain I overcame the MKV playback issue by installing the Shark Codec Pack. Good luck

I just noticed in your log post that the MKV that plays is Matroska version 1 and the one that doesn't play is Matroska version 2. Sounds like codec problem to me. If you don't like the idea of Shark Codecs I think you can also download from Matroska. Here's a link http://www.ehow.com/how_8279787_play...windows-7.html

Just a quick update on my previous post....after a bit of research into your problem on the net the consensus appears to be to uninstall all 3rd party codec packs and then only install Shark 7 codecs. Please let me know if that fixes your problem. It's really not a DVD fab issue but rather a Windows thing.

Wow, you Sir are a superstar!

The Shark codec pack did indeed solve the problem and it's now playing! Fantastic! Thank you ever so much! I had originally had my media center configured as minimalist with just ffdshow and Haali. That seemed to work for almost anything until I tried the DVD Ripper to MKV. I then uninstalled everything and tried the CCCP pack.. I then tried lots of variations..

But, as you said, I uninstalled everything, rebooted then installed the Shark pack and now it's all working.

                        THANK YOU!

Glad you had a happy result. Hopefully you will enjoy using DVD Fab now, it's really a great bit of software for anyone playing with media players.
