Always get lag in audio

The MKV profile that folks are talking about here gave me crappy video encoding results.

There has to be something funny going on here.

Quite possibly... My definition of "crappy" is way beyond what you're thinking of in terms of viewing distance and equipment specs. This is "crappy" as in:

• Jaggies on the lead-in studio credits
• Boxy color on all soft tones (like skin or night shots)
• If you FF or REW, then the first 30 frames (appx 1 sec) of video look like Apple ][ 16 color graphics.

But the audio was in sync from start to finish.

Remember, I don't have the sync issue with all DVDs. Something's triggering the issue. My test disc right now is The Departed.

I have a test waiting for me to check from 6.2.2.0, and I also just started a rip on 7.0.4.0 using your Samsung profile.

One downside of the Kodak box is that it won't support the MKV container anyway, so that rip was more about looking for a solution to the audio sync issue first, then worrying about getting it to work with the container I need.

fwiw, The results above were from playing back the MKV rip on my PC right after encode using VLCPlayer. The PC is an AMD quadcore, 2.6Ghz, 4gig RAM, Win7 64 eencoding to a NAS through 100mbps Ethernet.

I get absolutely none of this through ALL of my players, even ones that are 5 years old now. I use the generic.xvid.avi.audiocopy profile for them at 1100 bitrate.

I also use mkv for my WDTV, but I had no idea I could keep an uncompressed image into an mkv container nor did I have a clue on how to get it in there. I assume I can go from DVD to a single iso with fab right?

So I got my movie which is in an mkv container and play's in perfectly A/V sync and used the AppleTV default settings to encode it into a mp4 file.

you really lost me here. You are saying that u have and use WDTV. Why in a world you need mp4 and Apple TV profile. Even good quality dvd video will be trashed by these formats. Apple TV can't even digest content over 720p resolution, 5 Mbps bitrate limitation, 320 Kbps max audio rate..... give me a break, it's year 2010 outside, not 1910.

Now, here's what you do with your DVDs:
aa. open DVD in DVDFab, select Full Disc option in DVD to DVD mode. Enter target directory using not folder, but little blue disc symbol button. That will save your dvd in ISO format. Make sure quality is set for 100%, click "Start". In a few minutes u will have picture of your disc saved on your HDD. Put your DVD back in a box, it's your backup now, u don't need it anymore.

bb. Go to the Web and google for MakeMKV. Download and install. Open your ISO with MakeMKV, select titles you are interested in (I usually selecting only main movie - rest of the titles are extras, etc.), select all audios subtitles you want (remember, MKV is a container and you can select and have them all), select output folder and click Make MKV. Congrats, you did it. In a few minutes you will have clean and pristine uncompressed content your WDTV will love.

cc. Last step, go back to the Web and google for MKVmerge (it's part of MKVToolnix) download MKVtollnix with MKVmerge in it and install. Now you have most of the tools necessary to work with MKV container.
You can open mkv file you just created with MKVmerge. It will show all your tracks, subs, chapters, all guts. Here you can assign default flags to the tracks, forced track flags, new timecodes, time delays, all kinda staff.... When you done playing with it, enter destination and click Start muxing.... in a few minutes you will new content.... Enjoy.

Lastly, If there is a pain in a ... file I come across once in a while with a/v sync issue or something like that, most likely more radical measures required. Best of all is to run your content through something AviSynth-based, where you can re-index and re-stamp the content. XviD4PSP works best for me - great program (don't be fooled by its name), others like HandBreak.
All this software is freeware.

However, even these programs are doing their little tasks pretty well, it still a helping tools to a core program - DVDFab.

Just checked my MKV H264 encode of "The Departed"

Did a quick check of this on my best player in the joint, a Measy E8HD () and a Ziova CS615.

1. No jaggies in the credits
2. Flesh tones fine. I watched the scene of Jack Nicholson & di Capprio inn the bar talking as a test.

Give me some specific time marks to have a look at.

As I said, there is something funny going on here.

How about we start a a low end profile and compare results for say the first 2 chapters of "The Departed"?

what MKV profile are you talking about DVD2Mob or BR2Mob?
DVD2Mob I just tested worked beautifully. BR2Mob is really really bad, I communicated it to developers and their response was no, it's good. So I thought - heck with that and write my own profile - works really good.
What I'm trying to say, maybe it's your hardware doesn't take settings very well.... try to play with it, customize, it will work eventually

Your points on compression are taken but I am certainly not going to take up 5-7Gb of space when I have more than acceptable quality with files 1-1.5Gb although I do agree with MKV being the container of choice.

Unfortunately, some of the older designs of players will not support this format and some will not even accept H264 encoded video. As I can have up to ten (yes 10) players installed in my house at any one time, I have to be circumspect on what formats that I use.

Mate, glad to hera that you realise that we all are trying to be constructive here!!

On the MKV format, anything the I want to play on my top line player that I have indicated above, I will encode to MKV as I feel that it gives far better resul.

I have tried using various software to obtain a MKV passthrough of 5-7Gb and the MKV audiocopy profile in Fab which produces a ~1.5Gb file and have made the decision that I am not prepared to waste 4 times the disk space for only a marginal increase in quality,

To give you some idea of my library, I have over 500 movie titles & thousands of TV Series stored on 8 Terabyte of storage. To do this with no compression, I would need 25-30 Terabyte without going into Blu-Ray !!!

Just not feasible at this time.

Impressive man, I only have abt 200 DVDs. I'm Blu-ray guy. I think I have pretty much every BR released to date... all of them I compressed to mkv, abt 8-10gig each and playing with WDTV. They all on 6 2TB drives Tell me about it....

I don't know it by either of those names. I picked the one that Greg had mentioned at the top of the thread: "generic.mkv.h264.audiocopy".

While I was at work I remoted into my home PC and did a couple of things. I'm home now so I'll list them below with the results. The test disc was The Departed".

• DVDFab 6.2.1.8 with "Apple TV" profile

Not all-encompassing, but "uplifting".

I have other movies here that were done with the 6.2.1.8 combo, I'll start re-doing them now with 7.0.4.0 and the Samsung profile and see how it plays out.

Hi all. New to the forum, but have been using DVDFab for over a year now.

I'm also experiencing issues with the new release. Lag in audio with the two movies I converted this evening-Beyond Reasonable Doubt and Bad Lieutenant.

I've never had any issues with this in the 250+ movies I've converted over the last year or so. DVD to DVD works fine. I also reinstalled a previous version 7.0.3.5 and reconverted my ripped copy with no success. I did not re-rip either DVD after reinstalling the previous version. I use the Zune setting as I need the files in .wmv format to work on my and my wife's Zunes. I also tried the xbox setting with no success. The conversions also had a/v sync issues.

I have always followed "best practices" and rip to the local hard drive before converting. I'm running Windows 7 (64bit) with a AMD Phenom X4 925 processor @ 2.80 Ghz. I have 8 Gb of RAM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated to resolve this issue.

I always have used the zune.wmv profile.

I just tried converting one title (a preview) and changed the framerate to same as source and still had a/v sync issues with a 4:38 clip. I've never changed the framerate before, but read on another post to always leave same as source so I thought I'd give it a try.
