if you would like to view your movie list using thumbnail, check out WD Thumbgen. Works perfect with your DVDFab's .iso, .mkv or even original .m2ts files!

Can I link to the freeware download directly? (not links to "other forums" related comes directly from softpedia, can delete if that's against the rules as well?)
I find this program makes searching my movie list that much cooler.
Yes, links to freeware downloads that does not compete with or compliment Fab are certainly permitted.
Thanks, I just find this little app to be helpful while using the WDTV Live.
And despite other members assumptions I represent Thnumbgen...its free. I downloaded the free program just like anybody else would. Its just a simple little UGI that searches various databases such as imdb.com to find .jpeg and movie info etc and converts it to the WDTV specified thubnail sizes.
Sure you could use photoshop to accomplish the same thing...but no reason to go through that hassle when there's programs out there that will do it automatically.
I use it and would recommend to those who like to customize things.
I too have a WDTV live and it is great. Have B'rads latest Homebrew and use TG for thumbnails
I am new to the forum and came here for info. Thank you for the info I have gleaned from the forum. I am presently backing up SD/BD concert videos to HDD from DVD using MKV containers. I am developing a process to use DVDFab and x264 but am unsure if it is correct for using the x264 codec.
I have read the default h264 encoder (using CUDA) can be improved upon and that that the x264 encoder produces better results (I have also experienced "bright" results using the existing codec and my HD4330 CUDA video card encoding) So I will attempt to disable h.264 w/ CUDA, enable x264 and will soon try the special WDTV profile. The process I plan to use is as follows:
To disable DVDFab's "CUDA" encoder, use S/W only encoding using the x264 encoder, and use special x264 profile for WDTV within DVDFab
Install x264 codec
Turn all encoding to "Software" in DVDFab:
1) on the top right there is a green circle with a check, click on that.
2) click on A/V that is where you can disable your gpu acceleration.
3) select "software" for all codecs - VC1, x264, etc.
4) restart DVDFab - CUDA is disabled
Use DVDFab's DVD to Mobile or File to Mobile function
Select WDTV profile:
x264_WDTV_High_Quality preset within DVD Fab <--- haven't tried this yet!
could you comment on my approach and direct me if you believe improvements could be made or I am completely of my rocker

Where is the WDTV Profile? I don't see it anywhere. following your instructions.
I'm trying to Rip a DVD and encode in .MKV, H264 file, 1 pass Fixed Bitrate 2000 kbps. Frame rate of either 23.976 or 29.97 which is what most moveis are filmed in. Audio is same as source. The DVD id " Insomnia" No Cuda settings all Software. Audio sync is way off! I have encoded it to MP4, AVI and MKV in all the possible different FRates, Profiles or what ever and it flat will not keep the Audio in Sync. I also switched DVD-Roms No difference
The crazy thing is I had a problem with " Gladiator DVD" In your competitors program with the same Audio Sync problem, The movie is 2H-37M long.
Someone said try DVDFab7 and I did and I used the the same parameters as mentioned above and it worked beautifully, I'm all jacked up, then I start my next DVD, Insominia, shorter movie, Brick wall again! It seems to be a hit and miss thing.
elinks,
First of all, I apologize that I couldn't get back to you any sooner due to my travel. However, your post is a good illustration of "thousand users-thousand solutions" kinda situation when it gets to video converting and otherwise manipulation.
There are few conclusions all users agreed on, and one of them - less codecs installed on your machine - less problems you will have. In a past I had codec pack installed on my machine because freeware I was using all required third-party codecs, and especially my beloved Media Player Classic Home Cinema. Things are changed however, MPC doesn't required outside codecs anymore - have its own (very good ones, BTW), DVDFab have its own, etc.
The only one outside codec I have purchased and installed on my machine is CoreAVC. I'm absolute fanatic of MKV container, and Core products are developed by same group of developers. I trust them blindly...
So, to make story short, I would encourage you to experiment as much as you can for a couple of reasons: (a) you will find you "golden middle" solution that works for you in your environment, and (b) you will gain so much experience and knowledge and became active contributor of this forum.
And lastly, my DVDFab configuration on both my machines is this:
Decoder
H.264 - CoreAVC
VC1 - CUDA
mpeg2 - s/w
Encoder
H.264 - s/w+CUDA
I found DVDFab internal CUDA codecs are, by far best out there. They works flawlessly if your hardware optimized for it.
BTW, I have GT330M card on my laptop and GTX295 on my desktop.
Both works perfect with these settings. Both my machines are i7 now.
