DVD Ripper Option to extract only subtitles

I'm not entirely sure how the encoding of subtitle tracks work. I know they are embedded, and I take it bitmap images with are time coded.

What I would like to do in DVDRipper is to be able to extract only the .idx and .sub files. I understand there are a couple of freeware programs out there which can do this, but hey, I'd rather do it right there with the Ripper if that option were available.

for example Rip to .AVI/divx and enable an option for "extract subs only".

That option is already available if the DVD allows. In edit settings-Subpicture you need to select Extract to idx/ sub file instead of Direct render to Video

Yes, but it also extracts the video as well, correct? That is what I use now when I rip/convert new DVD's, and I get three files.. WhateverTitle.avi, WhateverTitle.idx, and WhateverTitle.sub.

My request is for a feature to just demux (whatever you call it) and yank out/create the .idx and .sub files without the video. Wouldn't that be a somewhat speedier process considering that the video would not need to be converted?

I think it would be exceptionally cool feature for DvDRipper to incorporate.

To minimize the time, use the smallest video screen size and bitrate available on the Edit page. Maybe this feature can be added in the future.

Thanks for the tip Signals. That does take the process down to about 15-17 minutes on an average 80-120 min DVD (on core 2 machine). The only problem with that is I have already converted 600+ DVD's (the entire collection over the past year or so) so saving minutes by eliminating the video entirely would be awesome. There must be other users in the same/similar situation who could use this feature.

Since the code is already in place to do it, the implementation should be fairly simple (famous last words, eh?). What I like about using DVDFab for this is that it generates files that are always in synch (even with the older conversions). Bang bang plug and play. No editing, no joining, no learning curve, just copy the two files into the folder with the video and play it.

Like I mentioned, I do think it would be an exceptionally cool feature to add.

Until it's implemented just use VSrip to extract only the streams you want (with Passkey running in the background if necessary).
