    tweaking fab for faster compression

i just updated my graphics card to nvidia gforce to take advantage of cuda.. so far havent noticed a huge diff in speed for compression so far between the new card a nd my old ati radeon hd 3450 card... here's what is showing..
    Graphics Chipset :
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 520

    CUDA Driver Version: 3.20
    CUDA Capability revision number: 2.1

    Supported Video Codecs :
    CUDA_MODE_H264
    CUDA_MODE_VC1
    CUDA_MODE_MPEG2
    DXVA_MODE_H264
    DXVA_MODE_VC1
    DXVA_MODE_MPEG2

    CoreAVC : is detected.
am i doin anything wrong????? i also have lightning encodeing checked as well.
should i uncheck it and let cuda do all the work or keep it checked??im using 8.0.8.5... same results on latest version as well thanks..

    scottyb25,
What compression mode are you using. Please provide detailed information of what you are doing. What speed are you currently getting? Are you processing your content from HDD or optical drive. Without information we can't really understand what you are doing, nor help you in any way.
    BTW, turn off lightning...

im compressing from disc to disc(optical drive) not hardrive as i have found it wasnt any faster after rippin to hd first.. im using main movie compression... the speed im currently getting is right around 1.5mb/s-2mb/s tops... im only on a core 2 duo 2.20 GHz with 4gb memory windows 7.. thanks..

I think the bottleneck is your CPU. For GT 520, dvdfab will enable Encoder and Decoder both. You can set encoder to CUDA only.

i thought so... im peicing together a new system as we speak.. gonna upgrade to either i5 or i7 with 8gb memory.. is there much diff in speed for fab between i5 and i7 processer?? im sure i7 is faster but though id ask if you see a huge diff in fab between i5 and i7..

Go for the i5-2500K which is about $100 cheaper than the i7-2600K. If you look at the reviews the small performance increase isn't worth the extra money.

If you chose between i5 and i7, there will be slight difference in performance, but both can manage your GPU in parallel computing just fine. However, I would recommend to go with SandyBridge processor with Z68 chipset as martythebrit suggested. This will give you advantage of QuickSync technology

                best settings for compression

hi just upgraded to a higher end system i5 2400 turbo processer nvidia card with cuda.. was wondering whats the best (fastest) settings for compressin to a bd25 or dvd9??? cuda on all3 settings?? (last option is software+cuda) do i need to install core avc?? check lightning incode tab??? there is a new option for me at least that says intel quick sync?? just want to know how to get quickest compression times.. any advise is much appreciated..

Remember you are also saving wear and tear on your drives by compressing on the HDD not just speed

I would suggest using CUDA for both decode and encode functions, since you have a very good video card with an i5 cpu. Make sure you have the latest nvidia driver installed. The speed bottleneck in compressing or converting is the read speed of the optical drive in most cases. If you plan to compress and possibly make a conversion for another device, you will save time by using Blu-ray Copy to write the output uncompressed (set for BD50) to a folder on your hard drive, then make the BD25 compression and MP4/MKV or other conversion from that Source. Write to an external hard drive if you have one, since when compressing to BD25 or other you will be reading and writing the same hard drive, which also reduces speed.

how long does it ususally take to rip to a folder on internal hdd?? say for example.. a full disc 32 gb file?? i did a test and i took about 35 min.. also when compressing fron the 32 gb file to another folder to fit the bd25.. im getting faster speeds when checking the lightning encode option box in settings.. avg about 8.50mb. as compared to about 5.00mb when using cuda alone.. i have latest drivers installed also core avc which doesnt seem to make any difference in speeds of my tests with core avc or without..

after further testing i was able to compress a 32.5 gb movie to a bd-25 with compression time right under an hour.. using the settins all cuda and enabling lightnong recode.. this was also without ripping to hdd first.. so needless to say im very happy when upgarding my system i have knocked off about 4-5 hours of compression time...
