    CPU/GPU AMD APP not working

I recently updates my GT 240 nvidia card with an AMD (XFX) Radeon 6770 card since I needed DirectX 11 support. However I lost the CUDA support I was used to with my old card. I luckily found out about the AMD Codecs, so I installed those in hopes that my decoding/encoding fps would get a boost. I'm running Win7 Ult 64bit, Catalyst 11.11 driver w/ the 11.11 AMD Codecs. When I go into Fab, I now see the AMD App listed as an option in the pull-downs for codecs, but when I select it, I get a pop-up that states my video card doesn't support them. What's going on? I thought all newer AMD cards worked with these?

Also, I haven't much other support or threads here discussing the AMD App codecs. Maybe because AMD, ATI, etc are too short of a search term. I tried Catalyst, Radeon, Codecs, but couldn't find much.

    Any help would be appreciated.

you have to install the AMD MEDIA CODEC package... and the AMD APP are OK!

..or use DXVA (works good and nice speedboost)..

    bye!

lzk87 - That's what I did. Installed the 11.11 Catalyst package and then the 11.11 AMD MEDIA CODEC package. Just saw last night5 that 11.12 was out for both. I'll give those a try tonight.

Tried the 11.12 Catalyst driver and 11.12 AMD Media Codecs. Still shows up in the Fab options, but states my card doesn't support it when I try to choose it.

        Any ideas?

Okay, my bad, after installing the AMD Media Codecs, you need to go into CCP and go to the video option and click the "enable acceleration" check box. I would have thought installing them would have enabled them, but I guess not.

Just in case anyone else has problems in the future.

I ran the AMD system Monitor and while all 4 cores of my Intel 9550 are maxed out, my AMD 6770 is at 0% when ripping movies to MKV's.

Any progress being made with this? Or any ideas what else to try? Am I doing something wrong?

                  I have an ATI-6970 and a ATI-5870

Both are working fine with the AMD APP codecs.

They are not fast thats for sure. The DXVA works about 33% faster for h264 to mkv convertions on my machines.

However if I wish to make Xbox 360 wmv files or iPad.1080p with prologic II audio I often run into audio video sync issues.

So I use the AMD APP because I've had no sync issues ripping a blue ray or dvd to any of the above formats.

Of coarse if I had bought this software before I had bought my 6970 I would have got a nVidia GTX 580 ti !

                  That is all.
                  Hope this is some help.

Hey Hooded, have you monitored your 6970 status with AMD's System Monitor? Mine shows the GPU isn't even being used. Curious what other are seeing. AMD System Monitor is available on AMD's web site.

Well I did some monitoring yesterday using pretty much all the different decoding options for my ATI cards.
All these where tests of 2 hour movies being converted to m4v via the mp4.ipad.1080p dvdfab profile. All were ripped from blue-ray directly to m4v file on hard drive. All files were tested at end and play back just fine.

Using the AMD APP seems to be doing nothing.

Using the DXVA seems to do a little better on my 6970, but has a nice steady 35% usage on my 5870.

                        Continued

Converting VC1 video show much the same results as above.
The AMD APP doing nothing, it's all on the CPU. While the DXVA seems to run at a steady 40+ % of the GPU usage.

On my 6970 card, conversion of VC1 using DXVA shows little to know usage like the DXVA on h264 files

                          Continued

The MPEG2 with DXVA or AMD APP seem to do nothing as well. The 5870 doesn't support DXVA for MPEG2 while my 6970 does.

So after I've done all this testing, I'm left thinking that DVD Fab is not using the AMD APP properly it would seem.

I get better GPU decoding performance just playing back the videos than while I'm decoding from blue-ray using the AMD APP codex.

I hope this info is of some help.

From what I can gather from previous posts, ATI cards are shaky at best.

Quick Sync and CUDA work well though.

This is my understanding as well. At one point the AMD drivers did not support encoding at all, not sure if this is still the case. You should not expect a big speed increase, if any, with DXVA but the quality may be better than what you find with CUDA.
