Trouble with DVD9's on set top players

The advice for DLs across this forum and many others is to use Verbatim ONLY and it comes from people who have already made the long journey.

...and you point is? I appreciate you replying, and with all due respect, don't just quote something like this without telling me what it means. As far as I'm aware, I've always been using it, so why am I "suddenly" unable to burn DVD9s for use on set top boxes?

It means:

1) that ImgBurn's author, the one person who knows more about disc burning than anyone on the planet thinks this driver is a bad idea and may cause problems.

2) the rest means try Verbatim DLs and report the results. Blanks from other sellers are made by many different factories and have very poor batch-to-batch uniformity, i.e. one spindle may be fine, the next may not work at all.

Make sure you have ImgBurn set to place the ISO9660 and UDF 1.02 filesystems on the burned disc.

I don't think you need to give me posting instructions.

Hello again.

Sorry to keep dragging this out, but I have finally purchased some Verbatims with the AZO layer. At around £2 per disc these are not cheap. Anyway, as I suspected, they too failed to be recognized in my set-top box.

The set-top box sounds like it is struggling to find some data or something. It makes the normal sounds when I insert the disc, but then makes a kind of spinning, grunting sound and eventually gives up and says, "No read".

So, out of curiosity, I got hold of about a dozen random DVD9 discs that I burnt a while ago, and I put them into my set-top box. Now, if the set-top box was faulty, then surely it would struggle to recognize these discs? Well, it didn't. It read them straight away without any odd sounds.

I'm pulling my hair out now. I just cannot find a solution to this.

Oh, I've just noticed that I purchased Vertabim DVD-R, not "+R". So I'll try and buy some of those but again I suspect that I'm gonna be throwing more money away.

Burning Problems

Tried a lot of disks over the years, would confirm Verbs probably best dual layer on the market, can't remember the last coaster i made.

Have you tried another burner, having some problems myself with intermittant disk playing problems, all where found to be related to burning on my Pioneer. The LG has had no problems.

Also try burning at 4×, most playing problems i encounered when first burning disks where due to burning too fast. I did put this to the test on a range of disks and speeds at the time and burning too fast was as bad as burning too slow. (they where tested on a Sanyp dvd/vcr combi, one thing was guaranteed if it played on the Sanyo it played on anyhing).

Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is my second new burner in as many months. Knowing what I know now, there probably wasn't anything wrong with my old one!?

I did notice that the burn speed was not set to 4x or to a slow speed, but I think I reset all the settings back to what I had them set to when I used to burn discs successfully, which was to have this set to "automatic". I will try another one at 4x, but I'm not confident that it will make any difference. I'll give it a go though.

Oh, Signals, I managed to find a program to uninstall the Duplex Secure's SPTD driver. Unfortunately it didn't make any difference, but many thanks anyway for the suggestion.

Sorry you are still having problems. I notice you are using -R DL blanks, are you certain your standalone player supports them (unusual to use -R DLs)?

Amazing! I've just managed to burn a DVD9 disc successfully. And it was on a TDK disc!

Since last night, I've uninstalled a bunch of programs, DVDFab and Imgburn included, and then installed DVDFab again. That did not wok on my first disc, but I've noticed that DVDFab has just released 8.2.1.5 so I just installed that.

Apart from that, the only things I changed was to select DVDFab burning engine; write speed set to 2.4x; 8152 (DVD+R DL).

The last two I have tried before without any success. But I did also set the Write type to SAO writing.

It was probably a fluke, and will probably fail on the next burn but thought I'd let you know.
