    Cloud Atlas Won't Burn

I can't get Cloud Atlas to burn. I have tried changing the Writeable Media Size for DVD-9 down to 8000 and then 7900, but still get the Burn Failure message. Any ideas?

Here's the dvdfab_burn_vso file, but it hasn't had an entry in 3 months. Not sure why because I use dvdfab almost every day:

According to the internal log, it tried to use VSO to burn Cloud Atlas:

            31m 04.39s: burn folder C:\Users\Kim\Documents\DVDFab9\Temp\MainMovie\CLOU D_ATLAS\ with VSO
Please check the other folders and see what burn engine selection is shown in Settings.

VSO Burning Engine is selected in Common Settings/Drives/DVD Write/Burning Engine. The other choices are DVDFab Burning Engine, Nero Burning ROM, and ImgBurn. I've never changed any of these settings. Which one is supposed to be selected? Thanks.

I changed the Burning Engine to DVDFab and now I'm getting an error message that says:

                I/O Error!
                Cdb: unknown
                SenseData: Timeout on Logical Unit

After uninstalling and re-installing and selecting DVDFab as Burning Enging, I got the same error message, but with SenseData saying this:

SenseData: Power Calibration Area is Full

Can't understand why all of a sudden DVD Fab is going bonkers on me

It's very likely not DVDFab that's going bonkers. This error can be caused by very poor blank media but more likely the laser in your drive is going out. The power calibration area on the disc has room for 999 tests, I wouldn't think it full. Slow down your selected burn speed to half the rated speed of the media, if the blanks are 16x set the burn speed to 8x and so on.

What Burn Engine should I be using? I have the burn speed manually set at 4x. I haven't had a bad blank dvd yet in the last hundred or so I've gone thru, but I know that doesn't mean any one of them couldn't be bad. In the past, DVD Fab would say that the media was bad, so I didn't think that could be the problem now. The PC is barely a year old, so I would be surprised if the laser in the drive is going out. Is there a way to test it to see if that's the problem? Thanks.

Don't get tripped up trying to put a life span on the laser diode in a burning drive. I've had them last a very long time and some less than a year. I think I would download and install ImgBurn and use it. Install it to the default location and Fab will find and use it. Open ImgBurn and select tools/settings and click on the WRITE tab and check the OPC box, see attached, it does a better job than the drives firmware at setting the optimum laser power for the media.

Ok, I downloaded and installed ImgBurn, selected it as my Burning Engine, and checked the OPC box as you showed. When ImgBurn first opens automatically to burn, it asks me to select a Layer Break Position, so I just select the first one and click ok. Then it performs the Optimum Power Calibration and I get another error message saying Power Calibration Error (see attachments)

Well the blanks may not be the worst there is but they are way down the list. You may have gotten a bad spindle, no way to know who made those or where. I don't what to tell you now, but I would try some higher quality blanks. Failing that it's time for a new drive.

Well, I tried another blank and it worked
Sure wish DVD Fab just knew to tell me that the blank was bad. It used to do that.
Is there anyway to make ImgBurn select the right Layer Break Position automatically?
