back up to external

I have always backed my DVDs to disk. I am thinking about backing them up to an external 1 tb drive. Do I need a program to play them other than Windows Media Player? I gather I just make the target drive as the external and proceed as normal.

I keep my video files on another HDD and it works good for me.

I use Win Media Player occasionally but prefer "VLC" Player. It's one of the best freeware players tools imo. It plays almost any format file.
