    Passthrough Question

I am new to this, so please bear with me. Copying some old DVD's to MKV files. What is the difference between MKV Passthrough and MKV Default???

MKV Passthrough does not re-encode the video, so the output of Passthrough in your case (with DVD Sources) would be MPEG-2 in an MKV wrapper, the same identical video that is in the VOB files on the disc. The MKV default profile decodes the video, then re-encodes it as h264. The files will be much smaller than MKV Passthrough but will take longer to process.

And in most cases, the quality of the smaller X264 files will not be discernibly different from the passthrough files as X264 is a more modern, efficient codec.

Do a test. All it takes is your time.
