MKV and VOB no longer allow "Direct Render to Video" for subtitles

Version 8 allowed direct render to video for MKV or VOB rips. But, in Version 9 I can only do that for MP4 rips. So, two questions:
    1. Why did this feature get dropped, or, what am I doing wrong?
    2. What am I missing in ripping to MP4 versus MKV or VOB?

Okay, one more question, what does "Remux into file" mean?

This is not version-related. You are apparently using the "passthrough" Ripper modes, which do not re-encode the video so direct render is impossible. Remux takes the subs and puts them into the output stream but does not render them into the video and is not supported by all playback devices, so check before using this. I use MP4 for all my conversions since most of our mobile devices are apple.
