Bluray backups dying...

    Bluray backups dying...

    I seem to be running into a problem with Bluray backups I have made...
    After backing up the movie with DVDFab, then burning the backup to a
    25GB Blu-ray blank, then testing said backup it plays fine. I have just
    started to go over some of my older backups, and find that they will
    not play now. I put said backup into my computer, and upon checking
    it with ImgBurn (in Discovery Mode), it shows the disc as being
    written to, but there is no information on the disc... It is almost
    as if the information on the disc has vanished... I am very confused
    by this, and am now wondering if all of my backups are
    going to eventually disappear...

    I of course no longer have the log file from when I burned the backup,
    as it was a long time ago now, but I do remember that there was no
    problems with the burning process itself...

    My system specs are as follows:

    Windows 7 Professional x64

    MBoard: ASUS Ramapge II GENE (x58 chipset)
    CPU: Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.66 GHz
    Memory: Kingston DDR3 1333 MHz - 6 GB
    HD0: Intel X25-M SSD 80 GB
    HD1: Western Digital WD6401AALS-00L3B2 640GB
    HD2: Seagate ST3500320NS 500GB
    HD3: Seagate ST31000340NS 1TB

    ODD0: ATAPI iHBS112 2 CL0J
    ODD1: BENQ DVD LS DW1655 BCIB
    ODD2: HL-DT-ST BD-RE UH10LS20 1.00

    ATI Radeon HD 4890 XOC
    ATI Catalyst 11.2 (64 bit)

    DVDFab reports:

    Graphics Chipset :
    ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

    Supported Video Codecs :
    DXVA_MODE_H264
    DXVA_MODE_VC1

    CoreAVC : is detected.


    I have attached a copy of both the dvdfab_internal.log,
    as well as the dvdfab_burn_imgburn.log.

    are the disk ridata?
    i had the same problem.

    burned fine and played, but a few weeks later, the wouldn't play.
    i found several references to this issue through google

      was wondering if any body had problems with optical quantum disc going blank after awhile. I have been using these for awhile now. Haven't notice any problems yet but i haven't watch any of my older movies for awhile. Verbatium disc i would prefer to use but they as so expensive right now.

        So far, they have all been Memorex (Disc ID: RITEK-BR2-000)
        that seem to be failing... I am looking into this further, as I
        myself only use Verbatim blanks now... Back when I first
        started backing up my Blu-rays, I used a few of the
        Memorex blanks listed above. I am now going through all
        of them to check to see if it is limited to those type of
        blanks... If so, what a rip! (no pun intended)... I mean
        those backups are maybe a year old at most! That is a lot
        of money wasted on some obviously faulty media!

        So far, I have come across at least 6 that show the same
        problem, all Memorex...

        I have at least 20 more or so to check... not looking good...

        I wonder if I can get my money back from Memorex....

          You can problem go on memorex website and make a complaint about it but probably would not refund without a receipt of purchase. No one keeps a receipt that long though. Maybe they will give you something free. Probably a couple of new disc which are junk anyway as far as you are concerned. I always have heard that verbatium is the best. Thats what i always used for dvds. But blue rays are expensive. I use the inkjet printables. Optical Quatum i can get for 1$ per disc as verbatim printable are much more expensive. Is there anywhere you can get verbatim printables at a reasonable price. I use 2bd 25gb. 50gb are way to expensive

            I actually heard about this problem even before I got into blu-ray burning. I'm surprised you all haven't. The issue is the cheap dye used with the lower costing blu-ray media deteriorating over time, usually a year, and drives will be unable to read them. I heard it affects Ridata and Memorex discs. I, too, have purchased Optical Quantum and wanted to test the longevity of them so I bought a little over 100 of them at $1 a discs with the thought that they may someday be unreadable. Of course, it hasn't been a year yet as I only started blu-ray burning a few months ago. However, I have marked it on my calendar as well as on the first BD-R I burned.

              Price really doesn't come into it when the backups do not last, does it?

              I don't know how many times senior members have advised against using cheap SH1T media.

              I would like a dollar for evey post on the subject since the first days of Fab...I'd be a millionare !!!

                Exactly! TDK or Verbatim! It cost more but it is what it is!!

                  As I said, I no longer use that media...
                  I use only Verbatim media now, both the
                  HTL and LTH types (although mostly HTL).

                  So far, out of 20 or so Memorex backups,
                  10 have failed... still checking the rest....

                    I know there were some problems with the Verbatim LTH so before of those too as they are pressed on a regular DVD press. I purchase my disc's from eBay and I think I saw an offer for 50 25GB TDK for like 107.00

                      with optical quantum you have to check the media code.
                      they buy from different manufacturers and rebrand them.
                      i've had CMC MAG BA3 (very good i thought)
                      and philips acode which had an 80% failure rate.

                        The optical quantum discs I use are Phillips. So far so good. I get verbatims whenever they're on sale. And yes, I've reviews from other people on Amazon who bought the Memorex discs and reported losing data after a period of time. Stay away from MEMOREX(Ritek)!

                          thought this was a lil wierd. I have been useing optical quantum for 3 months and never had a problem until i bought them on newegg then i ran into some bad burns so i am sticking with them on ebay.                             Hi dasadpoet
                            If you use ImgBurn it will tell you the MID of the disc. If not you can get it here http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download , install it put a disc in your drive open ImgBurn click the Discovery button and it will tell you the MID of the disc.

                              there is a program called dvd identifier.
                              it is free d/l and gives you all the info about the disk
