I am looking to speed up the backing up of my movies. When compression is needed, I am looking at 3+ hrs of ripping then burning to backup is another hour. During this time my Amd 3.1 duel core is pegged. Due to this i am looking at upgrading my CPU. My question is will a X4 be supported or even an X6. I know that some programs only support certain number of cores. Don't know what the case is for DVDfab.

Besides that, any other suggestions for decreasing that time?

More cores = improved performance; the more cores, the better.

Please do not compress on the initial rip from the BD disc.
Rip uncompressed to hdd, then go ahead and compress/modify/convert from the already ripped files, as you wish.

Doing otherwise creates needless wear and tear on your ODD (BD drive) and also creates a bottleneck

maineman is givin some solid information, I'd like to through in if you are upgrading your processor you might want to upgrade your power supply to! This in the long run will also give you the option to add say a better video card and more memory which will also help allot in compressing video!

But far as multi-cores, there are no limits to what DVDfab will utilize?

Far as power supply I am using a 750 watt supply and am running with excess. I have a radeon 4670 which sits idle during the use of DVDfab and of the 4 gigs I have, usage never goes much over 2 gigs and never over 2.2 gigs.

A/V set to software avg compression time 35-40min @13-15MB/s avg.

Rip=20-25min , compression=35-40min , burn=20Min

Burn depends on media and set speed. I burn at 2x 50gb media and it takes 1hr to an 1 hr 1/2 rip 25-40 min with 4 core AMD

I was looking at either amd 965 quad 3.4 or 1090t hex 3.2. Just wanted to make sure that the extra cores would be used by the software.

I'm running a hexacore and Fab uses all cores. I get a 45gb full disc movie done in about an hour 1/2.

I have always used AMD and the hex core is a great processor! I have read that the i7 2600 k or maybe it was the i5 out does the hex core AMD. So do your homework!

Intel I have read is a superior processor. It is also a decent bit more expensive. I think the Amd will do what I need for a reasonable price. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

If I may, add to the conversation, my 2600k takes about 45mins to compress 50gb to 25gb.
