LG BD550 Player stopped playing LTH BD disks -- HELP!

I have a BIG problem! I have been burning Blu ray's for a few months now. I have been using Verbatim BD-R LTH type 25 gb 2x blank media. I have been playing them without difficulty on my LG BD550 player... that is unit today!

I attempted to watch Ratatouille today. I got a "Check Disc" error. This is a first for me, so I inserted another BD LTH movie. Same message. Then tried a third movie, Tangled, which I watched LAST NIGHT! Same message! I then tried a SD DVD that played flawlessly. I never did any firmware updates since last night (when I successfully watched Tangled).

I've turned the machine power off, then back on.

I don't know what else to do! Suggestions?! Is my player broken? Or is this a firmware copy protection thing?

Is your player connected to the internet? It may have done a firmware update without telling you. If it worked the night before and doesn't now, the only other thing I would suggest is to try blowing the dust out of it or using a lens cleaner disc.

FW updates would bring functionality to the player, you would have to check the updates to see if your player d/l an automatic update which I doubt. It would be odd to be able to play them and a update to make it so you can't!

Yes, player is connected to internet via ethernet port. Usually it asks "if" i'd like to update FW. I never received such a prompt this time. if a FW update took place it was "behind the scenes.

Regarding a potential "dirty lens". Are there two separate lasers? One for SD DVD and one for Blu Ray? Remember, SD DVD played just fine. It's the Blu Ray's that won't play at all. If it's the same laser/lens for both types of media, then I doubt it's a dirty lens.

        Thoughts?

Try to play one of your original BluRay disks -- you know, one of the ones you made the copy from. That should tell you whether it's a media or player issue.

You cannot use a regular lens cleaner for this it will mess up your player!

From my experience, LG550 is a bad player. I had troubles playing BD discs and I'm talking about original ones, even at first play. Halfway through the movie it would hang...

My LG BD550 will play ALL Original Blu Ray's. It just suddenly won't play Verbatim LTH type disks. I called the manufacturer. He was "unaware of the issue" (despite me finding others complaining of the same thing on a random Google search I performed). He says he is put an investigator into the issue. He took down my phone number and says he'll call me when he knows more information. My 1 year warranty is up in 1 week!

Apparently the BD 550 will play regular BD-R disks (just not the LTH variety). I have ordered some non-LTH blank media and will give them a try.

                  Hi Oetboy4,

Please visit to get more info about Verbatim BD-R LTH (Low to High) maybe not compatible with some Blu-ray players.

                  Hope it helps.

                  Sincerely,
                  --

All you would have to do is check the FW history ver updates. LTH is something that was introduced in a FW upgrade for most players. But as a rule if you value your backups I would just invest in some decent media! LTH are pressed on the same dies that they press DVD's on, thats why they are cheap!
