I think I would give it a try. It's cheap enough. It has worked well for me with an i7-820Q, I think you would see good results with the CPU you have.

Man now I feel bad about not posting my question I had regarding Nvidia cards yesterday.Might have helped you out. I found on a Wiki page regarding what Nvidia cards had which revision of Pure HD and what feature sets the different cards come with. This was found off a link on the CoreAVC forums. there are 4 versions of HD Pure decoding starting with RV1 last being RV4. CoreAVC requires a Nvidia card with RV2 or later to work. Then there is the VDPAUfeature set which is labeled A, B, and C. A having the least built in decoding/acceleration options and C having the most decoding/acceleration options. What I'm not sure of is what Pure HD Revision and feature set DVDFab works best with. I would guess rv4 and set c but I don't know for sure. Anyway here's the URL to the wiki page.
Check it out. The 9800 series has RV2 and feature set A. I was considering picking up a GS 210,220,240 since those cards come with the RV4 and feature set C.
That being said in way to long manor. Yes CUDA helps me. The Hurt Locker on my XP computer with the Raedeon HD5770 1GB DXVA decoding and software encoding 17-18 hours. The Hurt Locker on the same computer with GeForce 8500 GT 512mb CoreAVC or Cuda for decoding and CUDA+software for encoding 8-11 hours depending on the size of the disc and what movie was encoded in.
