I based my reply on the number of posts on this forum & other forums of people having problems with Fab on laptops.

Most people are reluctant to buy such a high-end laptop AND an external burner.

I used to use my laptop for DVDs all the time but I always had bad burns so purchased external DVD drive and that fixed the coaster problem. As for compressing a Blu-ray you should Rip full Disc and save to computer. Once that done then do the compressing to fit a BD25 using the file you just saved to hard drive. Which will cut the compression time down a little and as well save your Blu-ray drive from dying too soon from being overworked with the laser reading the Blu-ray during whole compression time

And in a general sense this is certainly true. I would not want to try doing much with any sort of single core CPU or some of the other crippled chips they put in inexpensive lappies (not to mention heat issues). The only point being there are exceptions.

And that's what I was was planning on doing. Getting an external drive or an internal drive with an external enclosure. I've had my current toshiba laptop for about 4yrs now. It's done the job that I needed it to do. Got countless # of burns on it. I'll be upgrading sometime soon. I hear ASUS make some pretty good lappies. My other question is are all Blu-ray movies on BD-50s? I like to backup just the movie only with 1 audio and 1 subtitle. Shouldn't that fit on a BD-25 relatively easy with little or no compression?

In most cases, yes, sometimes with no compression. It depends on the content of the original. The compression is not something to be feared as it is when compressing MPEG-2 DVDs. You will be amazed at the video quality, even with very low numbers (like 38%).

That's definitely encouraging. I RARELY backup the entire disc. And if I need to buy a few BD-50s, I will. Already looking at some laptops with i-7 core processors with dedicated video like nvidia and ATI. May go with the LG or pioneer burners with an external enclosure like Vantec. Thanks for all the help. This is what community boards are for!

With respect to the specific tasks of ripping, burning and converting BD discs, definitely go with NVIDIA and stay clear of ATI.
You'll want the added benefit of GPU acceleration that is available only with NVIDIA CUDA.

There is additional work to be done by the development team in Beijing for sure, but ATI is a dead end when it comes to GPU acceleration.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks, I'll take that under advisement.
